Wilson or, the Goderich

Provincial Police was named
the community relations
officer recently taking over
duties of the post from Prov,
Const. Wayne Moulton.
Wilson in the little time he has
been doing the job, has
already become a common
sight to school children in
Huron County:.
His efforts to get the OPP
viewpoint across to kids and
adults alike in the county
have resulted in him speaking
to 1,000's of youngsters and
100's of adults. His topics
range from babysitting to
rape in specialized areas but
normally tries to explain to
the public how they should
react to illegal situatiords they
are confronted with and how
the police cope with them. ,
Wilson speaks most often to
groups of school children or to
service clubs but is trying to
get his name known in circles
such as women's groups,
church groups, industrial
associations, farm
associations, unions and any
other groups that may be
interested in learning
something -'about safety or the
law.
One of the constables most
recent efforts has beep a
school bus safety seminar he
has taken to both children and
drivers alike. He has taken a
babysitting program into
schools to teach children the
correct approach to a very
responsible job and has given
youngsters some insight into
problems of . vandalism and
what happens to someone
caught being a vandal.

Property Committee
Chairman Bob Allen came in
for some criticism Monday
evening from some of his
fellow councillors who
questioned a motion brought
in by Allen and his co-
chairman Eileen Palmer.
The motion asked that council
support the proposed tem-
porary repair program to the
grandstand in principle,,
Councillors wanted to know
what the temporary repair
program was, and Councillor
Allen explained there was&no
decision yet on how the
matter would be resolved. .
"The motion simply give
the racemen our "support, to
show them the town is behind
their efforts," said Allen, He
said a closed meeting was set
for Tuesday evening to
discuss the entire subject.
Deputy -reeve Palmer
advised council she had
seconded Allen's motion on
the clear understanding that
no municipal money would be
for the grandstand
renovations and repairs.
L have no intention to ask
the taxpayers for money for
this project, now or ever,"
said Deputy -reeve Palmer.
Councillor Stan Profit
suggested some renovations
will be necessary at the
grandstand from the
municipal point of view, in
order to carry .out certain

Council will attempt to
discover whether it "first

in the town's offer to pur-

Council has learned a
higher offer was submitted
from a private concern and
accepted by Marathon
Reality .after Marathon had
approached the town with a
clear indication the property
would be available to the
municipality for 520,000. The
offer to purchase was drawn
up in this amount, signed by
the municipality and for-
warded to Marathon. The
offer was never signed by
Marathon.
Councillor Elsa Haydon
told . council she was
"disturbed" by this piece of
business, and felt the town
should have been contacted
after the counter-offer was
filed, to see if the town was
willing to pay •a higher price
for the Marathon holding.
She asked when the harbor

"We may not have some of
the problems with crime that
cities have," says Wilson,
"but if we can avoid one
criminal situation. we have
done our job."
Wilson stresses public
assistance of police efforts
when he speaks to groups. He
says that the policeman's job
would be a lot easier if people'
would report any unusual
occurrences and would come
forward when they witness
something at an accident or
similar situation. He added
that while the per"son may not
feel the- information is im-
portant it may well fit in with
other information police have
gleaned and become a major
clue in a case.
He adds that a very small
portion of ,the community is
actually aware of the services
offered by OPP and very few
take advantage of the ser-
vices until an emergency
situation arises, The OPP
Goderich detachment Is
available to municipal forces -
in the county 24 hours a day
and provides such equipment
as a power Moat for use on
Lake Huron, skin divers that
can be at just, about any sight
in the county very soon after
'they are called, an airplane, a
helicopter, a highly trained
police dog specializing in
detection of drugs, a police
snowmobile unit and just..
about any other special police
service the provincial force
has.
Wilson concedes that some
of tete equipment is in Mt.
Forest detachment and some
is in Toronto but adds that if
time permits the Goderich
detachment can have the men
and equipment here if the
situation warrants it.
