The girls came to visit all the residents
and from a list of those who would ap-
preciate visits, each girl chose a
"grandmother".
The granddaughters visited in
February and brought Valentines which
some of the grandmothers still display
on the walls beside their beds. They also
brought cookies and danced for their
grandmothers.
Some of the grandmothers remember
fondly the girls' last visit and say that
they enjoy company any time because it
makes the time pass quicklyari'd fills up
a long day.' They appreciate company
anytime.
Ann has found the girls very un-
derstanding of their grandmothers and
she points out that it is a learning ex-
perience for the grandmothers as well.
Ann says that a senior citizen or a
family could adopt a resident which
would help to extend the program and
allow everyone to become involved,
"These people have so much of their
past to bring to us and so much ex-
perience with living as well," says Ann
who is very jealous of the time she has to
spend with each resident individually,
She would like to form an Auxiliary to
pull together the volunteer projects to
allow her more time with the residents.
Anyone who would be interested in the
volunteer program may contact Zoe
Raithby, nursing director at Maitland
Manor or Ann Saint John,

A stroll and a chat
Mary Jo Perrott chats with her "Grannie" Mary Rowed in the Maitland Manor Nursing
Home in Goderich where the young member of Canadian Girls In Training is involved In
the Grannie Program. The girls go to the home regularly to visit, chat and generally help
out elder residents who otherwise may get little company. (staff photo)
