The Life of Hope
ROM THE MINISTER'S STUDY
BY•THE REV, BEREA-BY-THE
MARVIN L. HARZ, WATER. LUTHERAN CHURCH
Jesus said to Thomas, ,"You
believe because you have
seen Me. But blessed are
those who haven't seen Me
and believe anyway." John
'20:.29L13
There's an old saying,
"Where there's life, there's
hope." Perhaps it is more
true to say, "Where there's
hope, there's real life."
Life can be rich and
beautiful when it is filled with
hope - a young couple looking
to their wedding day, a man
and wife about to have their
first longed -for child, a
person on the threshold of a
career. Hope brings joy and
excitement to living.
On the other hand, it is most
sad to see a person without
real hope for the future - an
aged person with nothing to
look forward to, a youth who
feels that life is empty and not
worth living, the dying and
fearful who see nothing but
darkness ahead.
But many of the hopes we
expect to brighten our lives
are very temporary and
unsure, Disease, accident,
inflation, fears, and in -

security rob us of our hope.
Events, or activities we
eagerly look forward to often
disappoint. The little hopes
we have change and crumble
like the world around us.
Too often, like Thomas, we
follow the old saw, "Seeing is
believing." We set our hopes
on things we can see, touch,
and taste. We measure the
full life by the type of house
and furnishings we have, the
type of recreation equipment
and opportunities, the food we
eat, the clothes we wear-, the
number of people we
surround ourselves with.
Hope in these things never
satisfies. If we do not achieve
our hopes, we are frustrated.
If we do, we are still not
content. In the end, death
comes to remind us 'that "you
can't take it with you"
anyway.
All hope is empty that is not
hope in the Living God. The
poet Dante has the words
written on the gate of hell:
"Abandon hope, all ye who
enter." We need a hope that
lives, a hope that is bigger
than our fears and
frustrations. We need a hope
that is bigger than death it-
self.
When• Jesus Christ died in
disgrace on Calvary, there
seemed to be no hope left for
Himself or His cause. But He'
has power over death and
defeat. He' turned the defeat
of Good Friday into the
victory of Easter morning.
He lives, He has conquered
sin, the cause of all sorrow
and hopelessness.
Jesus Christ can turn the
futile hopes and dreams of
our lives into living hope in a
living, • loving God. He can
give new hope to over4ome
pain, sorrow,. sickness, even
death, Trust your life, all of it,
to Him. Come alive to God
through Him who was dead,
and is alive, alive forever.
Then you -can have a hope
that will not disappoint you.
And whatever life"has•in store
for you, you will know that the
best is yet to come!
