Bruce construction workers will oppose bargaining propos
..Over 3,000 construction
workers at the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development last
week indicated their support
for a committee challenging
the provincial governments
proposed changes for
collective bargaining in the
construction industry.
Representatives from an ad
hoc committee got over 3,000
signatures on cards
protesting a bill which would
put collective bargaining for
construction trades on
provincial level.
Terry Frazer, of Hamilton,
secretary of the ad' hoc
committee, told The News
that support for the drive
against the bill at BNPD was
"overwhelming".
He said more signed cards
addressed to Labor Minister
Bette Stephenson are ex-
pected to be sent from .the
area on top of the 3,000
already mailed.
He said his committee is
composed of about 30 rank
and file members of unions
involved in commercial and
institutional construction.
The committee is in touch
with six local union stewards
at BNPD, he said.
He said his committee
believes the average worker
has not been properly in-
formed about the provincial
amendment to the take away
collective bargaining power
from union locals.
a
The committee believes
that the bill is designed to
take over where the federal
Anti -Inflation Board leaves
off to keep wage increases
low. Mr. Frazer said the bill
would be a gross violation of
free collective bargaining if it
is approved; as rank and file
union members would have
little say in province -wide
agreements.
The ad hoc committee has
sent a letter of protest to Mrs.
Stephenson and has
requested a meeting with her.
As well the committee met
with the provincial Liberal
caucus yesterday (Tuesday)
and has requested meetings
with the caucuses of the New
Democrats and Progressive
Conservativees.
Huron -Bruce MPP Murray
Gaunt told The News he was
unaware of any concern over
the bill as it has previously
received the support of top
union officials.
He said the only person who
has contacted him about the
bill was a Hydro construction
worker who is concerned
-about Hydro workers not
being included under the bill.
"We've really had nothing
but support for it," the
Liberal member of the
provincial parliament said.
Under the provisions of the
bill, bargaining agents for
Hydro, union
agreement.
The executive board of the
Canadian Union of Public
Employees, Local 1000, has
recommended a one-year
contract to its members
which includes about 1,500
workers at the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development.
The contract calls for an
eight per cent increase for
workers at the bottom of the
salary schedule and six per
cent for those at the top in the
technical and clerical
categories. A general eight -
per cent raise has been
agreed to for all other
members of the Ontario
Hydro Employees Union. •
The increase would bring
'the top trade rate to $9.39 per
hour. Benefit improvements
include four-week vacations
after 10 years service, six
weeks after 30 years, an
additional floating ;statutory
holiday and extensions to
existing dental and health
plans.
Ballots from a membership
referendum on the proposed
contract will be counted May
5.
Local 1000 and Hydro
bargaining agents have been
meeting since January 3 to
iron out the new contract. The
old agreement expired March
31.
The terms of the new
agreement will have to meet
with federal Anti -Inflation
Board approval.
Need parenting course
Connie Osborn, education
chairman for the Goderich
and District Pro Life •.Group
called in to the Open Line
show in London on Thursday,
April 7. The. subject was
"child abuse" with
pediatrician Dr. McKim of
London discussing the sub-
ject.
Mrs. Osborn felt that child
abuse is often done by.
parents, who themselves
were abused as children.
Preventative measures could
he taken through the schools
and other media. Connie
suggested that a "parenting"
course be given in the
schools,
Mrs. Osborn asked Dr.
McKim how concerned he
was about the intrauterene
battered child. The unborn
child, killed in the womb,has
given society a callous at-
titude with regard to Respect
for Life, she said.
Dr, McKim felt this was`
another subject and that we
should be concerned with
people who are here,
"It is significant," Mrs.
Osborn answered, "that as
abortion has increased in
Canada, child abuse has
risen."
A study done by Dr.
Lenoski, Assis. Prof. of
Pediatrics and Emergency
Medicine at the University of
Southern California has
shown conclusively that 90
percent of battered children.
were planned pregnancies.
The -re is a high degree of
expectation for perfection ,on
the part of parents of planned
'pregnancies.
Dr, McKim did not believe
that this study was valid. He
felt that 90 percent of
pregnancies were unplanned
and only 10 percent planned.
Many abuses occur with
under 20 year .old parents, It
is a child, raising a child, Dr.,
McKim said, and these young
people often wear their
children like flowers,
The study on "Child Abuse"
by Dr. Lenoski is available
from Connie Osborn on
request.
The Goderich and District
Pro Life Group congratulate
Adrian Keet, president of
Wingham Voice for Life, who
began a 400 mile walk to
Ottawa on Good Friday at
8:30 a.m. from the Wingham
Town Hall. Mr. Keet hopes to
average about 25 miles a day
and complete the walk in
about 16 days.
It is planned that he will
have accommodation with
members of the Pro Life
organizations along the way.
Adrian plans on being in
Ottawa for the Festival of
Life which takes pla'ee on
May 5, 6, and 7. This is
sponsored by Alliance for
Life.
