All should pay their share
A11 milk producers in
Ontario. not only industrial
shippers., should accept their
responsibility zinc' pay their
fair share of the export levy
on milk sales, Blake Sanford,
Coordinator for Region 3.
Natfilm.)' Farmers Union said
I Isi wick. .
1't10er' lw dairy policy
announced April 4 by
;Agriculture Minister Eugene
Whelan, industriaal ttiilk
producers. are atisessed a levy
of "1 . '0 per cwt. lo finance
-.export sales of excess dairy
products. and fluid milk
producers are being
regl.iested to contribute an
;average of '5 cents. per cwt.
representing their share for
products ma.ntifactu.rt'd from
fluid milk.
Mr. Sanford said there was
a greater increase in
production during the 19 -Vti
,dairy your by fluid producers
than that Oas by industrial
produvtrs,, and. thus the in •
-
clustrial shippers problems of
the 19 (i- dairy -year can he
attributed to a -r large degree to
the increase ase of fluid
producers whose excess flows
into the industrial nuitket. He
said reports that the Ontario
Milk ;Marketing Board was
resisting a levy on fluid milk
"just dors not seem ,justified
nor fair
-Fluid producers need the
indush fol market, not only to.
take alto of their • till rplus
production but also as a
market for the skimmed -off
cream to make two percent
milk which finds its way for
butter manufacturing, This
has: he'cn increasing at uhout
three (Itlatl'tcrs of one percent
per year, and displaces the
equivalent of approximately,
111 million cwt, of industrial
milk"
Mr. ° Sanford said the
current' situation only again
point' up the need for "'one
pool" marketing of milk, In
Manitoba where complete
pooling of both industrial and
fluid, milk dols not put any
extra' hu rden on producers.
He said the National
harmers union policy has
.1 I wayS been for one pool
marketing. In 1968 the OMM13
established a program known
t graduated entry, to enable
industrial producers to
gradually phase-in part of
their production into the fluid
market, but since that time.
