County Director of Education
ochrane was given approval
to begin staffing county Schools
school year 1977-78. Board of
.Y 111 on approved the director's
stu,1 endation to begin staffing
IER1,t, ary schools to a maximum of 315
s and secondary schools to a
m of 273 teachers.
YU,1
rane reported to the board that
mentary school staff ,need was
.n an expected enrolment of -6,768
YZ1,Ipl s, down slightly from this year's
ent of 6,787. Cochrane said parts
iEAr county Other than Clinton would
r a reduction of -one teacher but
'3024
increased enrolment in•`the Clinton area
would have made the engagement of one
additional teacher necessary even
though Vanastra School were not
opened.
The opening of Vanastra requires an
additional 1.5 teachers making the
Grades 1-8 ration of teacher -student 21.5
to one in 1977-78.
For special areas in the system
Cochrane recommended the hiring of
two home economics teachers, two ,in-
dustrial arts teachers, one half teacher
for each 28 pupils for kindergarten and
a' maximum of four teachers for special
education.
At the secondary school level the total
adjusted enrolment in 1977 will be 4,692,
up three students. The present staff is
273 and Cochrane recommended that the
ratio of 17.5 students to one teacher is
adequate and that the same complement
of staff be kept.
Clinton Trustee Dorothy Williams
pointed out to the board that the ratio of
students to teachers is based on all staff,
principals and librarians included, and
that not all the staff actually 'teaches.
Shesaid the result is that not every class
has only 17 students in it as may be
suspected by the ratio used for hiring.

ommittee member resigns
The Goderich Area Housing Action
lmmittee accepted the resignation of
ember John Lyndon but wouldn't
ccept the reasons Lyndon gave for
signing.
Lyndon, themanager of the Huron
ousing Authority, claimed a possible
nflict of interest in committee
usiness if he remained on the board and
chose to leave it.
Lyndon felt that he may be caught in
cations where the town is dealing with
deral or provincial agencies re housing
d may force him to either remove
mself from the business or have a
flict. +le felt that possibly another
rson who wouldn't face that possibility
old better servte the committee.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt asked that it be
recorded that Lyndon had never in the
past had a conflict of interest and
probably never would have pointing out
that the reasons for the resignation were
not in existence now and were not
concerning the committee. He said he
knew the town certainly appreciated the
services of Lyndon on the committee.
Chairman Don Wheeler told Lyndon
that he couldn't expect to get away that
easily, saying he knew the housing
authority manager would be working
closely with the committee in the future,
just as he had in the past.
"I don't feel i got away," said :Lyndon:
"1 knew by decree 1 would he obliged to
come and visit you."
