But if all Jesus. did was give us a higher ethical standard then all he has done. is raise our level of frustration: Man's problem has never been not knowing what he should do. His problem has been the lack of power or strength to do what he knows he shbuld__ _ Christ not only gave us these high ethical teachings but he gave us, the ability to live as we should. Christ gives to us forgiveness, cleansing, and his own righthousness. -AL,•oLthis is a free gift. He does for us what we cannot possibly- do for ourselves. This is the major difference between Christianity and other religions. Every other religion is a do- it-yourself religion. Follow this way of life, they say, and you will gain favor with God. D. T. Niles of Ceylon says that in other religions good works are an "in order to".,In order to gain , salvation. In Christianity good works are a "therefore", after we have received salvation. In all other religions people work to win salvation. In Christianity salvation is a free gift. It cannot be earned. 'Once the person has become a Christian he will voluntarily and willingly do good works. His love for Christ will initiate the ethical life-style. Christianity is what God. has done for man. Other religions are based on man seeking and struggling oward Gobi. Thus Christianity is 'the only religion . that offers assurance of salvation. MARCH 17, 1977 By The Ii fay. Ronald Ashton yK 704ct94wc't'lr A few weeks ago, a friend was telling me about a time when she was feeling sick and depressed and much in need of some moral and physical support. "So, I called my sister in Toronto," she said, "to see if she could possibly come for a few days. Without hesitation, she answered, 'Yes', and as soon -as she walked into the house I began to feel better. Sisters are wonderful!" They certainly are. Sisters are one of God's most precious gifp and I never cease thanking Him for mine. My sister is a person in whose company I feel com- pletely safe and comfortable, able to pour out all my thoughts and words without, having-te--weigh them first. I can do this because 1 have such trust in her ability to sift them through her faithful, loving hands, to keep those that are worth saving and to blow the rest away with an understanding smile on her lips. Fortunately for me, she seems to feel much the same about me and on Valentine's Day she sent me the following lines. She's someone you can confide in, and depend on when you really need her. A sister will be honest with you when she tells you how you look : You can believe her. -"that's how you look!" She's someone you, can sometimes see eye -to -eye with, and then -other times you wonder how two people could be so different and still be related. 'Sincerely believing something does not make it true as anyone will testify who has ever picked the wrong bottle 6ut of the medicine cabinet in the dark. Faith is_ no more valid than the object in which it is placed. A nurse very sin- cerely put the wrong medication in the eyes . of a dear friend of mine. Her sincerity did not save my friend from blindness. The same things apply to spiritual things. Believing something doesn't make it true anymore than failing to believe truth makes it false. Facts are facts, regardless of our attitudes. In religion the question is always, Is it true? For example, the deity, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are at the heart of the Christian religion. Islam, however, denies the deity, death and resurrection of Christ. The fact is, one of these mutual contradictory views is wrong. They cannot both be true, no matter how sincerely both are.believed. Though there are some similarities among the world religions, the differences far outweigh the similarities, The Golden Rule is one of the similarities found in almost every religion in some form or another.
