Here Goderich defenseman Steve Arbour matches muscle with a Series ends in flurry Goderich G & P The Goderich Green and Parent Midgets were elminated from Ontario Minor Hockey League playdowns Monday night when they dropped the fifth game of their "series with Glanbrook 7-6. The midgets went into the game needing a win in regulation time to tie the series and a win in overtime to win it. Goderich got on the board first when Gary Peters scored from Mike Larkin and Roger Lewis at 8:18 of the first. Just over two minutes later Terry Whitehead scored to tie the game • but Rick Rawson picked up a loose puck a minute later and fired it past Glanbrook netminder Michael Berry to give Goderich the lead back. Glanbrook grabbed the tieing marker just before the end of the period when John Cook fired a blistering drive from about 30 feet out that cleanly beat Goderich backstop Gerry Gaynor. Five minutes into the second period Glanbrook took the lead on a neat three way play • finished off by Cook for his second goal. Two minutes later Ivan Brunton made it 4-2 Glanbrook. Goderich fought back in the final minutes of the middle stanza and took a 4-4 tie to the dressing room. With 1:17 left in the second Dale Duncan cut Glanbrook's lead to one with help from Hugh Hanly and Gary Peters. With 40 seconds left Steve Arbour tied the game with Roger Lewis and Terry Kisch getting assists. Glanbrook used two . Goderich errors to get their two goal lead back early in the third. Danny Douthart picked off an errant Goderich pass and fed Terry Whitehead and Glanbrook led 5-4. Just over a minute later Glan- brook broke -up another Goderich passing play and Michael Haslam - shovelled the puck past Gerry Gaynor to make it 6-4. Goderich kept coming back and with 4:17 played in the period made it 6-5 on a play by Paul Helesic, Roger Lewis and Steve Arbour, Arbour getting the goal. With five minutes left Glanbrook scored what proved to be the winner when Ivan Brunton beat Gaynor. Goderich came within one of tieing it on an effort by Steve Arbour with four minutes left. Roger Lewis assisted on the goal. With 29 seconds left the teams bade farewell to one another with a "boys will be boys" brawl. Goderich pulled goalie Gerry Gaynor for a sixth attacker and with the puck in ' Glanbrook's zone Roger Lewis started mixing things up with goalie Michael Berry. The Glanbrook defense, in a chivalrous manner came to the aid -of their netminder sparking Steve Arbour to get involved. Glanbrook romps Goderich was blown out of the rink in the second game of the series in Glanbrook. Midway through the second period Hugh Hanly got Goderich on the board to cut Glanbrook's lead to four goals. Tony Bedard started the game in net for Goderich and was victimized six times by the end of the second when Gerry Gaynor took over and was beaten for three more. Hanly's lone Goderich goal was set up by Roger Lewis. Goderich revenge Back in Vanastra Saturday Goderich avenged the drubbing on the road and won their first game by a 7-4 margin. Glanbrook owned the opening --five minutes but Goderich took control and skated to the must win.. Hanly and Paul Dougherty to make it 4-3 and Gary Peters got the winner with an assist going to Paul Watford blast Merchants The Goderich Merchants went up against first place Watford in the first rotted of Intermediate "D" playoffs last week and were blown out of the rink in the first two games of the best of three set. Watford won the first game 7- 2 and clinched the series with' a 10-3 romp with Vanastra. Watford set the tone of the series 46 seconds after the puck was dropped in the opening game when Rick Jackson scored with help from Dale Cundick. Watford mate it 2-0 at 8:25 of the first when Bill Butler scored but the Merchants came back with one of their own to stay in the game; Ron Corriveau cut the Watford lead in half at 10:37 with some assistance from Paul Corriveau but Watford came back with two more to take a 4-1 lead into the second, Rick Jackson scored his second of the game and Wayne Westgate tallied. Goderich got the only goal of the second period when Cam MacDonald scored with 58 seconds Left to play to make it 9-2 after two. -- MacDonald got some help from Ron Whetstone and Jim .Hayter but Watford owned the third period and usedit to jgrab- their first Win. Dale Cundick,w Wayne Westgate , and Bryan Smith all scored for Watford to endthe game 6-2. The Merchants lasted five minutes in the second game of the series before Watford gots on the board and• managed to stay. in the game for a full period before Watford ran away with the score book. At 5:50 of the first period Bill Shea scored the first of 10 Watford goals, six of which were scored in the second period. The Merchants got a fresh start with just over four minutes left in the first when Cam MacDonald scored an unassisted goal but the tie lasted until the final minute of the period when Bill Butler scored an unassisted goal to give Watford the lead back. Butler scored when Watford were playing a man short after Bill Shea went off for cross checking. Watford added three more goals in the second period before Goderich grabbed their second goal. Ken Aarts, Bill Shea and Randy Brown grabbed one each, Shea's coming when Jim Hayter was off for high sticking. Ron Corriveau made it 5-2 with just over six minutes left in the middle perioit.getting help from Tom O'Brien but Rick Richardson, Kerry King, Alex Hastie and Wayne Westgate boosted the Watford lead to 8-2. Wayne Westgate and Alex Hastie chipped in with a goal each in the final period to give Watford a 10-2 lead but the Merchants were beaten but not dead. Tight game Both clubs settled into some tough fast hockey in the fourth}, game of the series and Glanbrook came out on top 2-1 before a home crowd. Glanbrook grabbed the first goal 32 seconds before the end of the first when Mark .Lundgren beat Gerry Gaynor on a three way play. Stealers drop Sarnia: Twp. opener The Lakeport Steel Ban- tams were squeezed 3-2 in overtime Saturday night when they played the first of a five game .semi-final series against Sarnia Township. Sarnia scored the first goal of the game at the 8:45 mark of the first period and Goderich didn't -tie it up until early in the second when Danny Maillet received a pass from John Huff and Larry Madge. Sarnia went ahead minutes later with Goderich playing a man short. At the 9:39 mark Sarnia received a penalty for roughing which gave The Steelers the man advantage. John Clement scored from Jim Costello and Mike Hodges to once again tie the score: Neither team managed a goal in the final period and so a 10 minute, overtime period was played. The winning goal was scored by Sarnia with less than five minutes of play remaining in the game. Steelers' goalie Stephen Callow came up with some'. outstanding saves and definitely held Goderich in the game. The Steelers came up with some tough -breaks . and just couldn't seem to put it together.
