ALICE JONES Nonagenarian , . . • Feeding the human. race can run from the sublime to the ridiculous, but it appears that Mother Nature is step- ping in and showing us that the pioneers were kept healthy and happy on the grain and fibre which they ate. Grain and fibres - great - have always believed that minerals and vitamins and roughage were very im- portant in our food and that tea minus the tannic acid was a great drink (providing you don't think of it as 'weak' tea). Since the big experiments made with the Africans and their diet and diseases" a great deal ,has been said for whole grain and raw fruit and vegetables.. Now they are all advertising fibre this and fibre that on T.V. I thought I might,try a loaf of their new fibre special bread since I like the whole wheat bread so picked up a ceiebrotes small loaf • and almost ROOD Altil ABOUT WITH MAW' smainiminammonnammum •• • Mrs. Alice Jones, formerly of Goderich celebrated her 90th birthday on Wednesday, November 24. • • She with her husband -and little boy, the eldest of six children, came to: Canada from Wales . in . 1911. They • settled in southern Saskatchewan and Mrs. Jones vividly recalls the drought, hail, grasshoppers and,dust storms ' of the 30s. The family moved to Ontario in the fall of 1937. Mrs. Jones. has been a resident of Petrolia for the past three and a half years having previously lived on a farm near Forest and later in Goderich. Her son, Ken Jones and wife and family reside on Bennett Street irtGoderich. Over 80 friends and relatives visited her during the days of 'birthday. celebrations. Lorne Henderson MPP • presented a beautiful .plaque on behalf of the Ontario. Government. l3est wishes were received from John Diefenbaker and from Premier BilrDavis,• Other highlights of .the special occasion included long distance telephone calls from friends and the new family • and gifts and calls from the ,grandchildren in Mexico; New York, Michigan; Saskatoon and Pangman, Sask.; 'and Haliburton, Tiverton, Goderich and Forest. \ Several cards were received along With many flAral • arrangemenp giving her living room the ,cheery iat- mosphere of a springtime flower garden. There was also a cassette from great grandchildren singing "gappy birthday Grandma." Mrs. Jones 'lives with her daughter,;Miss Louise„Jories . • and is a member of ,the Dawn Valley United Holiness Church..She says she is thankful for the Lord's goodness to her throughout her life. with dropped it in the cart. when I noticed the price . . , eighty - some • cents! Last Sunday w.e visited • brother Ira and' wife in • Sarasota and they have an avacado pear tree in their yard. At this point in time, the pears are real large and in the middle of the night awaken both he and the neighbourby falling - BANG - ori one of the trailers. - So I have four nice big 'A' pears and I am warned to use Jets a lemon juice On them - you have to GIVE them flavor, someone warned, or you wont like them. At the store they get 85 cents each for them how much are they up there? Well, use every bit an massage the peel into yo face - It'sGOOD for it - it says so right in the book! Powdered skim milk - add 44.to regular milk for its for- tifying value, .great incoffee • plus some wheat germ. - delicious 'and full of protein. Try it. You can cut down on that expensive coffee and have another different drink, like weak tea. Yogert, great for the system. Auleen Curry and Jean Papernick had a 105 total for the night Which stood as the best of .the East-West. Vera Hill and Dave ,,..Cornish totalled '991/2 for a second place hold ahead ot Bill. Bradley •and Aelian Weerasooriya who finished with 8444. Miss Claire McGowan ' entertained in her usual pleasing manner by speaking and showing slides on her trip to tlae Holy Land. She also had many' souvenirs of all the countries visited: Program Convener Mrs. A. Schram, asked that Mrs. F. Hawkins, pianist favor with several Christmas Carols. Mrs. M. McKenzie and her honesses- served a dainty lunch, after the meeting.
