Goderich flag dedicated;
hoisted by W.E. EIIiott
Despite. some criticism
over the past few weeks, and
despite snow, low tem-
peratures and high winds last
Wednesday, the , Town of
Goderich officially received
and dedicated its new flag.
In "presenting the flag, on
behalf -of the Jubilee Three
Committee, to Goderich
Mayor Deb Shewfelt, Judge
Frances Carter 'explained,
"Aware of the approaching
150 anniversary of the
founding of Goderich in 1827
by John Galt and Dr. William
Dunlop, the town fathers in
the late spring of .this year
established a committee,
known• as the Jubilee Three
Committee to prepare for the
Sesquicentennial
One of the first priorities of
that Committee, he ex-
plained, was to .design . a
distinctive and unique flag for
the town.
"I believ-e,"he told the
gathering of officials, citizens
and school children, "that the
new, flagamply sets forth the
principles, truths and history
belonging to this community.
The lower ' part of the rlag
represents the ' close
association of this town with
Lake Huron, on whose waters
ships ply back and forth to
this port, bringing grain for
its elevators and taking away
salt from its mine."
"It is reminiscent of the
happy. times spent by
vacationers and townspeople
hereon our beaches, and of
the sad times when those
same beaches are strewn
with the jetsam from ships
lost in the fury of a great
storm," he said. •
"The blueof the flag,
Judge Carter explained,
"represents the usual color of
our skies. It is also the color
of loyalty' and fidelity, and
calls to mind the many men.
and women who trained at
Sky Harbor here uring_ the
last war, and who vi ent from'
here to give their best in the
skies of Europe."
"The Square, "that unique
feature of Goderich .since the
town plot was, first laid out by
the Canada Company, is
represented on the flag by a
white octagon,". he.. said.
• "Much •of the history of
Goderich tools place and still
takes place on The Square
and on the streets radiating
from it." .
In the centre of the flag
there . is a crown. Judge
Carter said, "Goderich was -
founded in the reign of
George The Fourth. Today,
Elizabeth The Second is our
Queen. She, not the Prime
Minister nor . the Governor
General, is the head of state.
It is in her name that justice.
is administered, and it is to
her that all persons holding
public office and all
Canadians in every province
and of every race pledge
allegiance. The Crown on our
flag is to remind us of those
things."
"Surmounting the crown is
a cross," he said. "It is
similar to the cross awarded -
to so many for valor in two
world wars. It is to remind us
of the many from this town
who gave their lives in those
wars for our freedom."
With that fact inmind, a
color party representing the
Goderich Branch of the Royal
Canadian Legion was on hand.
at. the ceremony and received
a copy of the flag in a
presentation made by Jubilee
Three Committee member
Malcolm Campbell.
Mr. Campbell said that the
Legion was a "very im-
portant organization in our
community, whose members
are dedicated to remem,
bering the sacrifice of men
and women, for our country,
and to perpetuating the
eternal flame of democracy".
He added that it was "truly
fitting" that the Legion
should receive the new of-
ficial flag for the Port of
Goderich.
In dedicating the new flag
Rev. G.L. Royal told the
gathering, "God calls upon us
to 'live in community. In the
Sermon on the Mount, and the
Beatitudes, He, gives us the
rule to live by, and calls us
'blessed' when we do. We are
to seek always the Highest.
Through the communal
desire inspired in mankind by
God comes the need -f?ir
'visible symbols such as our
flag."
"It is meant to represent
us, it is meant to be honored
and respected, it is meant to
fly where we are, ,to be
remembered and cherished.
Much -thought goes into
making of a flag. It has been
so with ours, it emblemizes
our community. The flag is
us."
In addition to the Mayor
and the . Royal Canadian
Legion, copies of the new flag
were presented to
representatives of each of the
schools in Goderich by Town
Councillor Leroy Harrison.
Wednesday aftern'oon's
ceremony .concluded ' as
journalist, author and
histariah, W.E. Elliott of
Goderich, hoisted the flag
atop the pole in front of Town
Hall setting -it snapping in the
winter wind.
