workshop on special education
By Wilma Oke
A day -long workshop was
held recently for the 11
special education teachers of
•the Huron -Perth County .
Roman Catholic Separate
School Board at the board
office in Dublin.
The—workshop was one of
severalthat will be held
preparing these teachers to
become resource personnel' in
the schools.
Joseph Mills, Superin-
tendent of Special Services
for the -'board, said the
Ministry of Education wants
requiring special education,
to "try to keep students . Programs-
,)
in their own classrooins and
mentally handicapped
and for the child who is very
bright or gifted. -
Mrs. Kosa said the focus
needs to be changed away
from looking at what is wrong
with a kid and his problem to
what he can do.
"We. really need to look at
kids, We learn a lot more that
way," she said.
Dr. Stein. said, "It's easy
for _programs to be planned
but unless someone looks, at
the child he is lost in the
programming."
During a question and
answer period great many
questions de,1t with the
depr c ld, the causes
such • as negative • parents,
failure...how the teacher can
deal with it in the classroom.
Another question dealt 'with
what a teacher does about a
suspected "abused child"
such •as notifying the local
Public Healthpurse... These
were answered by Dr. Stein.
Mrs. Kosa explained the..
formal and informal testing
done to determine what is
causing a • child to be
educationally handicapped --
such as hearing and sight
problems, a weakness or
i i kill , nd other
medical reasons.
The evaluation' 'reports
indicated the teachers en-
joyed participating in the
• program where, they:were
able to share ideas and learn
from someone else.
•
established
in their own. communities. To
help the program within the
school we are preparing the
special education • teachers
now to become resource
teachers," he explained. •The
major focus is on early
identification of learning
problems at an early age--
Kindergarte, grade 1 or 2, he
said. •
• Mrs. Pegi Kosa, Resource_
teacherin special educationd
of the Dufferin-Peel County,
• Roman Catholic Separate
School Board, Mississauga,
and Dr. Paul Stein,
• Psychiatrist specjalizing in
family psychiatry and young
children, Bluewater Centre,
Goderich, conducted the
workshop.
Mrs. •Kosa discussed -the
setting • up of a resource
concept within the schools
with the • ultimate goal of
achieving more in-
dividualization in meeting the
needs of the children,
Dr. Stein, a resource person
to the separate board, helped
to explain certain ideas to the
special education teachers
and took a look at special
cases to enable them to be
resource people for the in-
dividual teachers in the
classrooms. •
Dr: Stein said, "It is
becoming .apparent to me
there is a need for special
education for the child who is

I am going to have a baby in the very near future and I'm
wondering if I could lose my job on account of this. My husband
works steadily but does'nt make big money, so my income is
sorely needecLand even with OHIP we know that our cost of
living is going to increase.
Can you tell us if the law gives me any 'protection from getting
fired?
Believe it or not, but it depends An whereyint work: If your
employer employs 25 or more employees, then you are protected
under the Employment Standards Act of Ontario, (S.13A). You
cannot be dismissed on account of pregnancy.
You are not allowed to work for six weeks after the birth of a
child without a medical certificate saying that you are able to do
so. You.are also entitled to a leave of•absence starting six weeks
before the baby is expected.
While your employer neednot pay you while you cannot perform
your work because of pregnancy or post -natal 'care, he' must re-
instate you when you are ready to report to work, with no toss of •
seniority or benefits; These provisions apply where you ha.V•V

A former friend of mine is holding possession of some clothes
and personal things until I pay him a.month's rent which I don't
think I'm required to.
Here is what happened....I lived in a hotiseowned by a friend of
mine, also living there was himself, his wife, and a couple of
other guys. We all paid 550 a month to cover expenses, and we
shared with the housework, cooking, etc. Anyway 1 was accused
• by my friend's.wife of not doing my share:
This started a big row and I told them 1 was leaving the nexi
day. He said fine, but that would have to pay a month's. rent
since I wasn't giving notice: Can he make me pay?
• • .
• s,
* No, your friend is wrong. You would have to pay a month's rent •
,• •
or give a month's notice if the Landlord and Tenant Act applied,
but it does NOT apply where you share the place, and where you
do not have exclusive possession of at least one part of it. •
The result is, that you are technically a boarder, and not a
tenant: Unless you specifically agree to give a month's notice,
you must only give "reasonable notice", to end the
arrangement.
