Hard work paid off for youngsters Mary Bourdeau presents
certificates to industrious Green Thumbers
The Goderich Green•
Thumbers held their Monthly
meeting at Victoria School on
Thursday, May •20. There
were 43 members present and
each answered the roll call
withthe name of a.:. wild
flower.
Mrs. Mary Bourdeau
presented the Junior Gar-
dener Certificates. These
were given to members -with
over 55 points out of a possible
75 points..The children had to
work extremely. hard to
achieve this many points.
George'Zoethout earned the
highest number with 67
points; Robin McDSonald
was -next with,66 points; Kim
Dobie had 63, points; Scott
Wilson had 63, and Jennifer
and. John Dobie each had 57
points.
Three Green .Thumbers
were mentioned. as
:Honourable members with
oyer. -50_ .points, they were
Patrick. Madden; Gardner
Moulton and Jim Walton. °
ArFrangerient cards were
given to the children as a
small token for their
achievements. These cards
explain just how to go .about
making a flower
arrangement. Starting with
theoasis, then the type of
flowers to use and the
finishing touches,to'put in the
• display.
" A lovely .container •of` wild
flowers,'. and plants were
brought in by Bradely Bet-
ties. He explained how he dug
the plants being very careful
not to disturb their delicate
root system, he transposed
the plants with their. natural
Prune roses carefully
for best blooms later
Gardeners who are fond of
the delicateappearance of
roses• -often choose several
types for displays in.their
flower beds. Because 'rose
types vary in their shape,
habits and growth, they must
be pruned differently, says
horticulturist R.F. Gomme,
of • the Ontario Mini-stry' of
Agriculture. and Food.
"Most types can be pruned
just before spring growth
starts. Proper pruning at the
proper time encourages more
growth andhas, a beneficial
effect on the qualityand
quantity of . blooms in the
upcoming •season,- he . says.
Each rose plant should be
considered individually and
prunecNv.according to its
-growth habits. Severe
pruning for some types can
Weakenplants and shorten
their lives.
The - hybrid . teas and
floribundas can , be pruned
back to within eight inches of
the soil, but canes of the
grandifloras should .be .left
slightly longer. Shrub roses
need little pruning, except to
remove weak or dead growth.
The climbing types -of roses
vary greatly according to the
variety and'should be pruned.
accordingly. Since they
usually flower on the previous
season's. growth, , they are
pruned in early autumn. Mr.
G,pmme states that gardeners
can prune out old canes' of
climbing roses in the spring,
leaving about four :healthy
canes per plant.
Regardless of the type of
rose, he indicates that it is.
important 'to . use sharp
pruningshears to avoid
'damage to the stems. He also
recommends that gardeners
;,,wait until all danger of frost is
over before • removing
mulches.frorn rose beds.
English cues keep well
Those of you who have
discovered all the good things
about the greenhouse -grown
seedless English cucumbers
will be pleased to know that
there is yet another ad-
vantage to add to the list.
Food specialists at the
Ontario ' Food • Council,
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food say that because of their
freshness when ,purchased,
these cucumberscan be
stored in your fridge for up to
lO days.
Since these cucumbers are
Canadian -grown And
marketed immediately after
picking; no wax coating is•
applied. Instead,• they are
covered with a clear plastic
wrap in order to retain their
freshness and prevent
damage.' When buyinglong
seedless English cucumbers,
choose those which are firm,
well -shaped and .bright in
color. Water -soaked spots are
an indication of decay.
Once home, remove the
wrap, wash the cucumber
and use without peeling, or
store in the crisper of your
refrigerator. If . you use part
of it, wrap the remainder in
waxed paper or plastic wrap
and return it to the crisper.
