Storm cost
L5 million.
The • cost • of putting the
hydro system back together'
again after the havoc caused
by the early March rain, • ice,
and wind storms, will reach
approximately $1.5 million.,
according • to Area Manager,'
Vatter . Palmer, Ontario
Hydro, Clinton Office. -
This figure is applicableto
the Clinton area only. Mr.
Palmer pointed out : 'it:. will,.
take several' months to
complete all re•'pairs,
replacements •and' clean-up
operationscaused by the
March 2 storm.. -
Six hundred square miles
was• the extent of damageto
this area. Broken poles
numbered 350. Six hundred
miles of rural line were out of -
service, with linehardware
and material (exclusive'. of"
wood poles) damaged. .
It was necessary for -Hydro
workers to clear ap-
proximately 2500. trees away
from -the lines. A. combination
of:__i:.ce.-and_vind plus ,broken
tree problem's caused ice to.
build ' up on the conductors'
and the wires. ' -
Regard,yig broken poles,
Palmer' said it was a con-
siderable clean-up job. He
added, l'A lot of farmers took "
the ' poles •,far firewood or
whatever."
It took the men tendays to,
' get things back to some
degree of normalcy foilowing
the storm although the clean-
up operations will continue
forseveral months. • •
The Clinton Area Manager
remarked he 1 really grateful
that there were no serious
accidents locally.
. Apparently, during' that
storm, many generators were
con•ne'cted without.
authorization of the local
I.nspector.. .
Palmer said, "It's ex-
tremely hazardous to : Hydro
' ybrkers. One young linesman
received serious electrical
burns in another area
because oft, this' unauthorized
generator system: I would
like to encourage every
custorne,r who has not a}iplied
for authorization to do so."
He reiterated, "I would
like every customer who has
had one of these generators
connected without inspection
to 'immediateiy make gip -
