With .all the talk about

quite appropriate to have
Paul Hunt and Tom,Greenall•
• join Women's Day Out last.
W ednesday. rn.orn-in-g
Together they gave. a,
.:•discussion and' very thrilling
and exciting ',demonstration
on self defense using the basic
forms :of Judo. .
• Mr. .Hunt said there are
. many kinds of 'sel'f defence
methods and some of • the
most, 'farniliar • ate Judo,
Karate,' Jujitsu, and:-Tchi
kwan de. .
There are' two • basic
rne.thods,. Karate rs strik.ing
u'srng n1c `ees,. Iin s an• eet
etc. Judo -uses close. contact •
•such as in flipping.
Which is the best or .most.
useful to••learn? That depends.
- •on the situation'you are inand'•
quite' often it -may help; to --
know both. Men are more
to - be,' involved in • street
fighting or barroom brawls,
for example, so Karate would
he, . more useful to them.
Women are usually victims of
attack so. they -would .benefit
from knowing Judo.
'Ads say a person can learn
the art •of'self defence in ten
easy• lessons.' All that is.
learned iii ten lessons is the
basic skills. It takes years of
practice to be good at it.
Self defence is•'mainly just a
lot of common sense. Many
have .already used self
defence in one way or another
such • as voices,, hands and
feet. The lessons teachhow:to
use these more effectively.
- There are about' five. basic
principles you learn. First is
yielding to a stronger force by
using it to advantage: Use a
-maximum of. energy with a
minimum of effort. Second is
using the element Of surprise.
It also ;teaches .and develops
conf•i•dence, balance and:
movements.'.Each principle is
related to' each other in one
form .or another, ••..• •
-
•• With this inside look at
•what self defence is all about,
My_ .Hunt '.an.d-Mr.. Gr•eenall
gave a • very dramatic'
demonstration on the various
techniques of Judo, -They.
showed the ladies different
. ways to defend oneself from
attackers as well as defence
against some one with a club,
gun or a knife.
In •giving demonstrations
Such as this one, Mr". Haint
said all movements are pre-
arranged to avoid any in-
juries . to each 'other. It•',was
easy to see how one could end
'up with broken arms and legs •,
if they didn'fknow what they
were doing. •
