Armstrong, writing in the

1958, ."Jock ..Adams first
appeared in Lucknow as
contractor- fi3r ,carrying the

mail from Goderich; with
passenger service as a very
remunetative sideline. H•e
• was ' .underbid on the • mail
contracts and ` .cut• the
passengerfare :to -get that.
,trade.. It is recalled that'his
business booster was the cry,
"Ahead o' the, mail;: or -410
charge." •
Mrs. Johan Clark in the 1950
Colborne . booklet recalled
that Ada'rrrs and A.M. Poll'eY`
were -rivals on the road, but
"Jock, was always good-
natured and in that way drew,
a good business; although his.
accommodation was ' very
poor he always had a full
load".
Jock Adams died in 1913 at
Walkerton. A.M. Polley, best
remembered as proprietor of
a livery stable in Goderich,
died here in 1921. He had

noted characters in the time
of:tlie stage coaches, lasting
.fromthe early years of:set-
tlemen.t W the inaiuguratioil
of rural' mail delivery. The
•Lucknow stage -made its .last
trip in October., 1'915, having
travelled th.e 'road for more
than a half -century.
' There .is a boyhood memory"
of the lean .horses, of the
Lucknow stage being rested
overnight in a lot and .small
stable at Nelson and Victoria'
streets, just `west of the
present Esso station.. (One
'wonders what hostler, fed and
watered . them six days a
week, while The alternating„
pair worked.) '•
Upon opening of the Buffalo
and' Goderich Railway on
June 28:, 1858, a daily mail to •
Kincardine, was established,
a contemporary newspaper
item states, "carried hor-
seback from Goderich".
'Presumably this was the
beginningof the Kincardine
stage Service.
A _Signal item of September
•24, 1873, tells of one night "so
dark'. the . horses could not
keep the road, -and ` the kin -

passengers:. "The stage '
• couches on Thu'rsday.had:big
toads' of human— freight;
:particularly the Kincardine
stage. The. genial driver had
perched on the proof of the
stage, with one arlri-arounda
burly passenger and with the
other driving the horses over
the jolting roads, seven timid
passengers' and a half inside,
trembling lest. there should be
a crash from above. It did not
come off, and all got home in
time to eat them hof cross
buns on Friday."'
