No Shortage of Sugar.
NEW YORK, May 24.—"The so-
called shortage of sugar does not
exist," declares Marcus Blakemore,
who has investigated available sup-
plies with the help of the Depart-

of the refining industry. "Present
prices represent pure inflation, caus-
ed through hoarding by sugar
speculators."
He said that with the sugar that
has already been received in the
United States and the amounts con-
tracted for and available on the
Cuban market, an excess of more
than 500,000 tons over last year's
total consumption is in sight,
"When we started this investiga-
tion, we thought, as everyone did,
that there really was a shortage. Our
purpose was to discover where the
sugar was so we could buy it for use
in our business. When we discovered
the facts, we called a meeting of the
a,aociation."
