No Shortage of Sugar. NEW YORK, May 24.—"The so- called shortage of sugar does not exist," declares Marcus Blakemore, who has investigated available sup- plies with the help of the Depart- ment of Justice and representatives of the refining industry. "Present prices represent pure inflation, caus- ed through hoarding by sugar speculators." He said that with the sugar that has already been received in the United States and the amounts con- tracted for and available on the Cuban market, an excess of more than 500,000 tons over last year's total consumption is in sight, "When we started this investiga- tion, we thought, as everyone did, that there really was a shortage.
