She was ac- companied home by Miss Edith Wel- ters.'. Jack, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Rydall, of Fullerton, is quite seriously i11 at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Kydd. Mr. Reginald Knight and bride,. returned from their wedding trip on Friday evening and are now set- tled in their comfortable home on Main street. Mr. and Mrs.. W. H. Tom, of Med- icine Hat, Alberta, and Mrs. (Rev.) W. Down, of Pickering, are visiting their mother and sister, Mrs. J. C. Tom and Mrs. W. D. Yeo. Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Pickard, Mr. Clarence Pickard and Miss Marguer- ite, left this week for Frobisher, Sask., where they will spend the summer on their farm. Mr. H. 0. Southcott has returned to Toronto after spending several weeks with his mother, Mrs. C. A. Southcott. He will leave in a few days for the west to resume his duties as traveller. The many friends of this commun- ity of Mrs. Wm. Coultis, of Toronto, formerly of Exeter, who has been seriously ill with bronchial pneu- monia, will be glad to know that she is siowl improving. Miss White who has been in the employ of Jones & May, Exeter, for a number of years, has taken a pos- ition in the ladies' wear and dry goods department of T. C. Joynt's.- Hensall Observer. Miss Ariel Beverley, of Toronto, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Beverley. Mr. Beverley has been confined to his bed for several weeks and is at present in a very critical, condition. Miss Martin, of Toronto, Prov- incial Organizer for the W. C. T. U. spent Friday last' in Exeter, the guest of Mrs. B. W. F. Beavers. Mrs. Beavers left Monday for Goderich in connection with W. C. T. U.>'work, she being the county president. Mr. Victor Sweet, who for a ,num- ber of years has been employed with the Studebaker Motor Co., at Wind- sor, has resigned his position with that firm and has accepted a simil- ar position with the. Cleveland Tra- tor Co., of. When the colors were presented to the 161st Battalion at Camp Borden, one of those to receive them was Lt. Walters, of Goderich town- ship. On the depositing of the colors in Exeter on May the 24th, the mother of Lt. Walters, the latter having lost his life in' France, will be presented with a medal. Instead of a room with four walls serving as a shelter in which children do sums by day, the rural school will soon be _a different. structure with cooking and club- house accomodation, where in the evenings old and young may as- semble and enjoy something in the way of social existence. This will be possible especially in districts that are closely settled. The Committee in charge of the 24th of May celebration are making big preparations for the day. Clin- ton and Crediton ball teams will Islay morning and afternoon games. The Murless Players, who have ap- peared in Exeter before and who have been playing in neighboring towns with good success, have been engaged for the evening. Plan to. spend the •24th in Exeter. Mr. and Mrs, T. C. McLeod, and .little son Murray, who recently left Exeter for Kitchener, visited in Exe- ter the forepart of the week. Mr. McLeod has a good position with a tire company in Kitchener andhas purchased a residence in Waterloo. He has returned to Kitchener while Mrs. McLeod will remain for a few days preparatory to moving their household effects to that city. The council have ordered 75 bbls. of road oil for oiling the roads. The poll tax was fixed at $3.00 for married and unmarried men who otherwise pay no taxes. Gladman & Stanbury, on behalf of John C. Moore, of Kirkton, have commenced action in the supreme court against Newton Gunning and Myrtle Gunning, of Granton, , for $7,350.34 for moneys which the plaintiff claims were obtained by defendants by fraud ,and for damage which the printiff claims for the non-delivery of certain goods in breach of contract. .
