Why Ile Supported the Fund.
The task of raising the Canadian
Patriotic Fund is not all serious work.
It is illumined here and there by flash-
es of humor, and everywhere there
crop out touches of human nature
that add zest to the work. Take the
ease of a Quebec county counciller.
His counteil had been asked to contri-
bute a certain sum yearly, and an of-
ficer of the Fund called on him to
secure his endorsation of the proposal.
He listened to an explanation of the
details, and then started to estimate
what the new thxation would imply
to him. Then he said: "All right.
I'll vote for the grant. I find that
it will cost me eight dollars, ---but I'd
rather pay even twenty dollars than
go to the wart"
with the Government will enable the
general public to contribute by their
savings towards winning the war, as
well as promoting at the same time now shares this knowledge with the
individual thrift and economy whole country, that wars are not won
throughout the Dominion.
The new war -savings certificates
will be advertised generally through-
out Canada next week.

Park is of 2,255 acres in area and
eight miles in circumference. It is a
favorite Summer resort, being fre-
quented by crowds of pedestrians, mo-
torists and horseback riders. Charles
I. in 1637 had the park enclosed and
used it as a hunting ground.
Bushy Park contains about 1,000
acres. It has numerous whitethom

although sacrifices ere the first necee-

er intelligently and steadily direct-
ed toward the end of victory. We
notice that Mr. Asquith denies "any
want of thoeoughness or want of
whole -heartedness" in the conduct of
the war by the late administration.
But the facts speak for themselves.
Before the war Mr. Asquith's gov-
ernment neglected almost every es-
sential of defence. Munitions, steres
and reserves of all, kincls were cut to
the quick; and there was not a shigle
naval base ready on the whole of the
East Coast. Since the war the Gov-
eronient were force,d by public opin-
ion, manifestly against their will, into
almost every measure of conseqtence
they undertook. That was the worst
possible way of conducting the war,
and we have now, as we hope, got a
Government which will not -follow but
lead,. which will not rest its 1)ack
upon nubile opinion, but show the na-
tion 1,vhat it is to do to win the war.
Mr. Lloyd George strikes the new
note in his first speech. He speaks
with a ring of hope, confidence and
energy of the great work now to be
done. Ho shows by the proposals of
which he gives an outline that the
Government conceives its policy upon
broad and national lines, that it has
not only ideas of how -the work is to'
be done, but means to carry them out.
