Sports
Olympics
from page 7A
take place in Korea with all countries
holding their breath and crossing every
finger and toe they have.
The real losers are the athletes. Men
and women who train all of their lives for a
chance at Olympic glory are suddenly
made to feel like pawns in a petty chess
game, or worse, targets in a war zone. On-
ly a drug -addled idealist could believe
sports and politics could be separated. A
writer – I can't remember who – once said
politics is involved in any group of people
larger than two. Before the Olympic flame
flickers and dies forever, basic changes
have to be made.
One way to eliminate at least soiree of the
politics is to give the Games a permanent
home. My idea is not new and Greece – the
home of the Olympics – has often been
mentioned as a good permanent site. The
Games must be based in a country that is
str*ble and large enough to handle the
responsibity. The host country should also
be one that does not actively seek
worldwide political gratification and
would hold the Games in the spirit of '
sports and international friendship. In ad-
dition, the country should be basically
neutral and internationally respected –
like Canada.
Canada is a country with no aspirations
of world dominance. We have little desire
to impose our will on the rest of the world.
If given the Olympic Games we would, I
believe, be flattered by the honor bestowed
upon us and endeavour to make the Games
as successful as possible. All other par-
ticipating countries could contribute
money to help ease the financial burden.
Indeed, the only political points to be made
would be to ::ee which country contributed
the most mosey.
Canada ha ; many friends international-
ly and very few enemies. Most countries
coming to Canada for the Games would
feel at home and very comfortable in the
knowledge that here sport is what matters.
If there is one country in all the world
that will not try to make political hay out of
the Olympic Games, it is Canada.

On Wednesday Bedford keep their tour-

come from behind 3-3 tie with the first

score with four minutes to play and Park
House managed to -survive a concentrated
attack from Bedford for the rest of the
game. Phil Paquette with a goal and an
assist rounded out the Bedford scoring.
John Peet, Steve Siertsema and Lenny
Kolkman on a nifty solo effort, rounded out
the scoring for the Park House.
Murphy's vS Zilliax
It was a sad Thursday night in the Bed-
ford Hotel however, when news arrived
that the Murphy's Green Man had ven-
tured to Clinton and came home with a 7-4
victory over Zilliax. This victory put Mur-
phy's into the tournament and relegated
Bedford to the position of onlookers. Roger
Lewis led the attack with two goals while
single markers went to Tag Sowerby, Tom
O'Brien, Bruce's Sheardown, Dave Moore
and Grant Gnay. Wayne Smith,' Dave
Smith, Scott Parks and Dean Armstrong
each had two points for Zilliax in a losing
cause.
