PAGE 8A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1987 Wiseman, John Moore discusses curling stratagy with elf, John MacKenzie at the Thursday night Industrial League Christmas curl. (photo by Ted Spooner) Sports Frightening Foresters still undefeated The Thursday Night Industrial League had a spirited evening of curling this past week, and even/hough the main objective was still to defeat the opposition, both sides had sun in the pre -Christmas competition. Costumed curlers, santas, wise men, shepherds and even elves were seen scur- rying up and down the ice, wedding decorated brooms and wishing everyone a "Merry Christmas" between calls of "Sweep, Sweep;" After six rounds of play, only one team, the Frightening Foresters remains undefeated, with the 1863 Sliders now at five and one. In third place are the Sheppardton Shuf- flers, and then there is a big jam-up in fourth spot, with eight teams sharing three and three records. This week's scores are as follow: In the 7 p.m. draw, The Foresters defeated the Hosers 10 - 2, Gardiners Big Enders defeated Hermans Hurlers 8-4, and Shep- pardton Shufflers hand the V & G Grippers a 6 - 2 loss. The closest game in the early draw went to the only team that didn't dyes§ up, so they got a big round of Hum -Bugs from the spectators. In this one, Ken Englestad and his 9 to 3ers showed some fine shot -making to win over a tenacious Legion Crew. A long raise take-out on the seventh end by vice -skip Chris Connor saved the game for the teachers, and some excellent shot -making on the final end put it away as they went on tdwin 9to5. In the late draw, two games went right down to the wire, with Charlie Crawfords Ice Cubes battling to a 6-5 victory over Dix- ies Flower Power, and Jeff Harrison and his Super Shell "Shepherds" squeeking out a big win over the previously undefeated 1863 Sliders 6-5. In the other games, the Rutheless Rok- kies hammered the Lady Forsters 12 - 2, and the Healthy Hackers defeated the Sifto Shakers 10 - 3. George Sutton was around to judge the best dressed and most spirited teams, and he gave the nod to the Sheppardton Shuf- flers for the most original outfits. Honourable mention went to Mary and her shepherds on the V & G team, who waited all evening for a "miracle" to happen, and it never did! The best dressed individual went to John MacKenzie i8 his big -eared Elf costume, while Gerry Riseborough as the "Ghost of Christmas Past" was runner-up! The Thursday night curlers want to ex- press a big round of thanks to Laurie, Bev, Vicky and her committee for the food, and to everyone who participated, a great round of applause and a big MERRY CHRISTMAS!
