"With the help of this new book, Housing Choices for Older Canadians, people will be able to see what might be best for them, and through their reaction, we may discover the best housing options for the majority of older Canadians," Mr. McIn- nes said. George Hees, Minister of State for Seniors, responded enthusiastically to the book, saying, "the information provided in this publication will help, seniors maintain independent lifestyle, -financial self- reliance, and personal choices". Seniors comprise the fastest growing segment of the population and. this trend will continue into the next century as the Baby Boom, Generation moves into the ranks of seniors. Today, just over 10 per cent of Canadians are over 65 years old. This will increase to 13 per cent by the year 2000 and to nearly 25 per cent by the year 2030. 0 Recent trends also indicate that average life spans are increasing. This fact, along with changes in the characteristics and circumstances of older Canadians, will in- fluence their choice of housing. Many new forms of accommodation, tenure and services are being developed in Canada, as well as in other countries. The booklet describes these new options although several are not yet widely available in Canada. Some of the less familiar forms of ac- commodation are Accessory Apartments, Garden Suites or Granny Flats, Con- gregate Housing, Life -Care Communities and Homesharing. New forms of tenure in- clude life -tenancies and shared -equity leases. • The booklet titled, Housing Choices for Older Canadians (NHA6009) is bilingual and is available free from Canada Mor- tgage and Housing Corporation. This was announced today by the Minister of Health and Welfare Canada, Jake Epp and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Tom Siddon. Toll-free telephone lines are now in place to provide up-to-date informa- tion to the public. Enquiries on any aspect of the issue can be directed to 1-800-267-2004. This service is available between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. (EST) in both official languages, 7 days a week. The first phase of the Government's ap- proach is a recall of live Atlantic clams, oysters, mussels, and quahaugs, to ensure that products are removed from the distribution chain. This operation began with the alert on Friday, December 11, and continues throughout the weekend. This phase is expected to be completed by Mon- day, Dec. 14. Once there is assurance that products covered by the alert have been removed from the shelves, the second phase of the operation will be carried out. This involves an orderly re-entry to the market place of products covered by the alert, as inspec- tion services are able to ensure that they fully meet health and safety requirements. A team of researchers from various federal departments, including the Na- tional Research Council, provincial organizations and universities, is continu- ing to work on an ongoing basis to identify the toxin. International consultation is also under way. The operations centre has been working throughout the day today. The centre will issue regular b lletins. r QUEEN'S SEAFORTH LIVE - THIS WEEK TUES. - WED. - SAT. "THE 88's" LIVE - NEXT WEEK MON. - TUESP - WED. Load Bond "STUNNED" THURS. - FRIP - SAT.
