Ssuthwstern 'Sntario Farmers Week
is given facelift on 50th anniversary
Weekend seminars on such generafin-
terest topics as Gardening, Home Land-
scaping, Buying Farm Land, Surviving
Auction Sales etc. coupled with over 50 ex-
hibits and demonstrations on such things
as Rope Making, Toy Making, Framing
and Photography, Antiques, Wood Carv-
ing, Heat Pumps, Wood Stoves and more
will be part of the newly expanded
Southwestern Ontario Farmers' Week pro-
gram set to run from Monday, Jan. 4 to
Sunday, Jan. 10, 19 .
According to College organizers the
traditional five day Farmers' Week for-
mat is being expanded to include a Farm
and Food Festival Weekend for a number
of reasons.
"Since its both the fiftieth anniversary of
Farmers' Week and the 100 anniversary of
O.M.A.F. we wanted to do something
special," says Farm and Food Festival
committee member, Chris Nanni. The
anniversary affords us the opportunity to
look back on what we've accomplished but
also rocket ahead with new and different
ideas."
Although the topics being dealt with dur-
ing the first part of the week are still the
meat and potatoes' for farmers in the
Southwest, the weekend activities will ap-
peal to people who have small acreages
and are marketing more specialized pro-
ducts and to people who farm but also sup-
plement their farm income with . "Hobby
Income".
"There are a growing number of rural
people who are starting small income ear-
ning ventures such as Toy Making and
other crafts, Maple Syrup Collection, Edi-
ble Soybeans, the growing of Correander
and Peanuts etc. The Farm and Food
Festival will address topics of interest to
those people and it will do so in a festive
spirit similar to a. fair. We are even plann-
ing a Petting Zoo for children which will
feature both farm and exotic animals,"
says Nanni.
The traditional five days of Farmers'
Week have also been given a face-lift to
commemorate its 50th anniversary and
the p.M.A.F. Centennial.
