Goderich Sailors dro i two g
to Mount Forest, Walkerton
BY T.D.
The Goderich Sailors lost a pair of close
games last weekend. Friday they lost 4-2 to
Mount Forest and Sunday they were edged
8-7 by the Walkerton Blackhawks. Both
were road games for the Sailors.
The Sailors have two more away games
this week. Tonight (Wednesday) they play
in Port Elgin and Friday they play in
Hanover. They will not play again after
that until Sunday December 27 when they
play m Wingham. Their next home game is
Friday, January 3, when the Mount Forest
Patriots play here.
The Sailors are hoping by that time to be
turning their close losses into victories.
The team is working hard and is only a
player or two short of winning. Team of-
ficials are hoping to recruit a player or two
from the Junior 'D' Clinton Mustangs who
folded last week and there are a few other
prospects.
The Sailors were shorthanded in Mount
Forest because of several suspensions
resulting from their game here December
6 with Port Elgin. Midget defencemen
Jason MilIlan and Scott Glen filled in and

both played strong games for the Sailors.
The teams were tied 1-1 after one period
and Mount Forest led 2-1 after two. The
Sailors tied it up early in the third period,
but two goals by the Patriots mid way
though the period gave the home team the
victory.
Chris Sideris scored the first Sailor goal
on a play with Darrell Durnin and
defenceman Jason Papple. Tom Bean,
who played like a man -possessed, got the
other Sailor goal unassisted. Right winger
Barry Thompson also had a strong game
for the Sailors who all showed good hustle
throughout the well -played game.
Sunday in Walkerton, the Sailors en-
joyed their most productive period of the
season offensively, pumping in six goals in
the first period, to lead 6-4 after one period.
s
However, the Blackhawks outscored the
Sailors 4-0 in the second period. Tom
Hawkins, who gave up the six Sailor goals,
was replaced in the Walkerton net by Sean
O'Hagen and he gave up only one more
goal to the Sailors.
Dave Duncan and Darrell Durnin each.
scored twice for the Sailors. Derek Jeffer-
son, Tom Bean and Todd Graham scored
the other Goderich goals. Derek Jefferson,
Darrell Durnin, Scott Stokes and Matt
Wilkinson had the two assists each for the
Sailors while Barry Thompson, Dave Dun-
can, Todd Graham, Jason Millian and Tom
Bean had one apiece.
Randy Fritz led the Blackhawks with
two goals. Mike Jank, Mike Lemenchick,
Charlie Weber, Mike Garcia, Jim Crad-
dock and Mike Rys had one goal each for
the winners.
The Sailors had a team breakfast Sun-
day before leaving for Walkerton. The
meal, at the Zoni Restaurant, was
courtesy of .Jerry Rivett, a member of the
team executive. Coaches Kent Phibbs and
Dick Madge felt the gesture was a very
positive morale builder for their team.
