The Grade 8 students have painted the lob-
by windows with a Christmas theme; all
other grades are busily preparing decora-
tions to give the building a festive air and
portray the meaning of Christmas.
The two co-op students this year from the
CRSS Grade 12 program are Steacy Elliot
working in Grade 1 with Sonya Vannetten.
They are now quite familiar with classroom
routines and their work is a welcome addi-
tion. Thanks, girls, for the beautiful bulletin
board display you prepared at the primary
end.
The greeting card and giftwrap fund rais-
ing campaign is now over. All orders should
have been delivered and money turned in.
Jayne Dykstra from the Grade 6/7 room is
the top salesperson bringing .in a total of
$531.04.
The Grade 2 class took a walk to the local
pet shop last week to see for themselves the
physical characteristics of fish. What a
great way to study a science topic.
After school sports have been resumed for
this year. Grade 5-8 students have a chance
to improve skills. Volleyball is the game
they are now working with in, the hopes of
preparing teams for future tournaments.
The Monday morning assembly this
month was led by John Huls. The theme was
Advent, and our way of preparing for the
celebration of Christmas. December is
already a busy month atlthe .school.

Increases for
many members
John Sweeney, Minister of Community
and Social Services, has announced
across-the-board increases for social
assistance recipients. These will be effec-
t%e as of Jan. 1, 1988.
The increases are expected to amount to
$82.6 million. They will benefit approx-
imately 270,000 recipients of Family
Benefits and General Welfare Assistance
cheques, representing about 500,000 people
including family members and
dependants.
"These increases will ensure that the
purchasing power of social assistance
benefits in Ontario stays ahead of in-
creases in the cost of living since the last
general rate increase of Jan. 1987,"
Sweeney said.
The major item is a five per cent in-
crease in basic allowances for all Family
Benefits Assistance and General Welfare
Assistance recipients.
In addition, there will be an eight per
cent increase in maximum shelter subsidy
benefits. The shelter subsidy benefit is
paid in addition to the basic allowances; it
is intended to assist clients faced with high
shelter costs.
These increases are being announced at
a time when the rate of inflation stands at
4.5 per cent.
There will also be an increase in the
maximum Handicapped Children's
benefit, which will be raised from $275 to
$300 a month. The Handicapped Children's
Benefit is assistance provided to low- and
middle-income parents caring for a
severely handicapped child at home.
