LONDON, ONTARIO N5V 1S1 451-2124 Just south of the London Airport Heat your water using the sun As much as 20 per cent of the energy con- sumed in Canadian homes is used to keep hot water flowing from the taps. A unique way to reduce water -heating costs is by us- ing the sun. Solar systems can be used to supplement or replace your existing water heater. Many models also have a built-in, back-up heater that can meet a household's hot water needs when there is no sunshine. The purchase and installation costs of solar water -heating systems can be recouped over time through lower energy bills. Solar heaters also offer a hedge against inflation; prices for electricity, oil or gas can vary but, after initial start-up costs, energy from the sun is virtually free. Solar energy technology Solar water heaters work on a very simple concept: collection, transfer and storage of sunlight as heat. This process provides homeowners with hot water, day and night, for laundry, dish washing and bathing. The collection of heat is based on the greenhouse effect. Sunlight beams through a clear glass or plastic cover and strikes a dark, light -absorbing material that converts the light into heat. A car parked in the sun with the windows rolled upillustrates this principle. The sunlight passing through the windows strikes the upholstery, which becomes hot. This heat is then trapped inside the car by the closed windows: In the case of an operating solar collector, temperatures can become extremely high, . easily reaching 95°C. Flat plate and evacuated tube collectors are two commonly used solar water -heating systems. A flat plate collector consists of a shallow 11114111111114 . Sunlight beaming through the glass strikes a black plate or absorber that is attached to a series of parallel tubes through which fluid passes. An evacuated tube collector consists of several glass tubes, each containing a black metal pipe through which the water passes and is heated. In order to ;reduce heat loss,. air is remov- ed from the space between the pipe and the glass, hence the term `evacuated'. Depending on the design of the system, in- sulated pipes transfer the heated water from the collector to a storage tank or directly to the point of use. The third component of a solar hot water system is an insulated storage tank. These are generally larger than conventional tanks, since sufficient hot water must be col- lected during the day to meet evening and early morning needs. Installation With careful planning, a solar hot water system can be easily installed and presents no inconvenience to the household. The Most vinibie components of the system - the out collectors - are attactively finished and occupy a space of only 5 m' to 10 m2. They can be install- ed on an unshaded roof or wall, or mounted on a special ground frame near the house. Indoors, connecting pipes running from the roof to the basement can usually be hid- den from view in closets, walls and floors. Selecting a system Solar water heater dealers can provide in- formation on current Canadian models; help choose the best location for solar collec- tors, piping connections and storage units; provide detailed cost estimates; and, in most cases, offer complete installation services. Before approaching a dealer, however, become familiar with the types of solar water heaters available on the market. There is no evidence to suggest that any one solar water heater design is significant- ly better than another. You should begin, therefore, by identifying the systems that can meet your particular needs. Your first important decision will be whether to purchase a seasonal or year- round system. Seasonal solar water heaters can be used only when the outside temperature is above freezing. They tend to be less expensive than systems designed for year-round use because they do not require an expensive freeze -protection mechanism. Seasonal solar water heaters must be shut down and drained when the temperature drops below the low temperature rating specified for the unit. They are particularly attractive for families that spend a con- siderable amount of time away from home during the winter or that use relatively little hot water. Year-round water heaters are recom- mended for families that use a lot of hot water or remain at home for most of the winter. These units usually provide more solar hot water than seasonal heaters but often at a higher cost. Solar water heaters come in three stan- dard sizes: 150 L/day, 225 L/day and 300 L/day. These numbers refer to the volume of hot water the heaters are designed to deliver on an average day, not maximum daily outputs. The amount of hot water used in your home will depend on the number of oc- cupants and appliances that use hot water, such as dishwashers or automatic clothes washers. With help from a dealer, you should be able to identify one or more suitable solar water heaters that are available locally. Preference should be given to models that feature flow, pressure and temperature gauges. Make sure that the necessary in- stallation and operating information is sup- plied and that you ,are familiar with the system's maintenance requirements, war- ranties and safe operating temperature. Finally, the system should be accepted by .the Canadian Solar Industries Association, meet Canadian Standards Association stan- dards and be installed by a technician qualified by the CSIA. Installation costs can be reduced if you carry out some 'of the work yourself. However, you will need some experience in electrical, plumbing and carpentry work, as well as some specialized knowledge on mounting solar collectors, priming the col- lector piping and installing control sensors, among other things. Do-it-yourself installations can also void warranties and must meet local building, electrical and plumbing regulations. • Information on federal government solar programs and lists of acceptable systems can be obtained by calling toll free the Con- servation and Renewable Energy Office in your province.
