Pick your time to read
Colleen advises bookworm
Dear Advisor:
I love to read, except if I get a book I can't
put it down. Then I putter around instead of
doing what I'm told to do. Please help.
Sally
Dear Sally:
Pick a time to read when you don't have
something to do or just wait until your work
is done.

Dear Advisor:
I have a problem. My cat gets out and
bites my nose. My family and I did
discipline him but he keeps doing it. What
should I do?
Your friend,
Stephanie
Dear Stephanie:
That is a tough one. Cats do what they
want and it's hard to correct them. Maybe
you're playing too rough with it or annoying
it. When he bites correct him right away or
he won't learn. If nothing works, call the
Vet.

My little brother always messes up my
room. What can I do?

Dear K.B.:
Discuss it with your parents about what he
does to your room. It's not that you're a tat-
tle tale. but it will stop him from doing that.

Martha remembers deep
snowdrifts in this area
Here I am November 1987 on a beautiful
sunny day. The sky is absolutely clear
blue, not a cloud anywhere. That little
snow fall last week was trying to tell us
something - but somehow I still can't get
organized. The snow, especially the first
one, always makes me think of our first
snowfall in Goderich.
When I was a kid we lived in Essex Coun-
ty - the bottom of the Great Lakes - the
lowest part of the Great Lakes system. I
think it was only two hundred and some
feet above sea level. The snow was a
wonderful happening. Here one day and
gone the next. I know the kids went wild for
the short time it stayed with us. We were in
the Sun Parlour of Canada, Essex County.
In Goderich we had snow- real snow,
that stayed around a while.
One snowfall many of us can't forget was
in '71. We spent a week at home. The
children in outlying schools were trapped,
some without, food and enough heat. The
snowmobile was a new toy about that time
and many people loved them, others hated
them, but I recall how we felt when these
snowmobilers risked life and limb to help
the stranded people - and as soon as possi-
ble rescue the children.
Seems 105 inches of snow hit our area.
Goderich had 78 inches, measurable - lots
of deep drifts. The snowmobiles were the
only things able to move and move they
did. Food and blankets, clothing and more
was taken to the schools. The teachers - I
really felt sorry for them - so many kids
had never been away from home, never
been stranded or knew what the word
meant. Can't you just picture them trying
to see out the windows, weeping and fuss-
ing? The teachers were wonderful and did
a superb job of calming the kids down. I'd
like to hear some of their stories they they
recall about those few days.
I recall a snowdrift - can't say what

ROUND 'N
ABOUT
With Martha Rathhurn
year, but we had moved to the apartment
in the "Nurses Residence". Behind us was
a six foot hedge and my friend Isabel lived
on the other side. Someone had created a
secret "pass thru" in that "fence" and I
was about to visit Isabel. It was Coffee
time. As I slipped thru' the secret hole -in -
the -hedge, I had a great surprise. I sank
down three or four feet in soft snow —
under a crust I knew nothing about. Our
back doors were less than a hundred feet
apart, but I travelled half a mile
backwards and forward in and out of huge
drifts to get there. I was wet to my waist -
and higher. There was no going back just
bore ahead - and at times that is what I did,
BORE.
By the time I reached her back door
even my sleeves were full of snow, so were
my boots and I almost lost one of them. My
pockets, hair and collar were packed with
snow. That stuff was over a foot higher
than I am and I was LOST in there. I was
red from the cold, soaking wet, and if I
hadn't had a sense of humor I could have
frozen to pieces under that snow. What a
sad looking Crocus I'd have been by
Spring!
Did you ever sit in a snowbank and fall
through - sink into it? Don't try it.
Anyway, I finally found the door and we
laughed for weeks about it. I'm still
laughing when I think of it. There must be
something wrong with me, I always see the
funny side of these situations.
If all our weird encounters with the
winter could be laughable, it would make a
pretty short winter. All I can do is wish you
could see the funny side of winter and en-
joy every minute of it. Sometimes even
play is hard work!
We all have our own snowdrifts to push
thru', but when you reach that open door -
with a laugh to greet you, it was not so bad
after all.
Walt just arrived - up early today, 10:30
a.m. I read the foregoing section to him
and said "What do you think - ?" I hoped
he would recall it and laugh - but there was
just silence, then – "I think we should get
the h— out of here. It's later than you
think."
That's the way it goes. Enjoy,
Love,
Martha
