Sailors look for win in weekend g
BY T.D.
The Goderich Sailors have set
themselves a goal for this weekend. With a
pair of home games here, Friday at 8:30
p.tn. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against the
Walkerton Blackhawks and the Port Elgin
Bears, the Sailors plan to have at least one
victory to their credit in the OHA Junior
.C' hockey standings by Monday.
Based on their showing against, the
Hanover Barons here last Friday, the goal
is not unrealistic even though the Sailors
head into the vi ;'kend with a 0-9 record.
The Sailors, with a full roster of players
for the first time since the opening of the
season, come literally within inches of
halting the Barons consecutive winning
streak at ten. The Barons won 8-7 but the
Sailors gave a gutty performance, coming
back from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game at
6-6 by the midway point of the third period.
The Barons then scored twice to seemingly
take control, but a power -play goal by
Byron Bowman in the last minute of the
game pulled the spirited Sailors to within
one. With six attackers, the Sailors exerted
considerable pressure around the Hanover
net in the last few seconds and came within
inches of the tying goal with two seconds
, emaining when Dave Duncan, standing
off the corner of the net, saw his shot go
just wide.
It was certainly a moral victory for the
Sailors, and their coaches, Kent Phibbs
and Dick Madge, could not help but be
pleased.
Dave Duncan had to be pleased, too.
Although that tying goal would have been
nice, the hard-working Sailor forward had
two other goals to his credit. Mark Cauchi,
Barry Thompson, Darrell Durnin, Derek
.Jefferson and Bowman scored the others.
Caleb Howard and Barry Riff have two
Duals apiece for the Barons who led 3-1
after one period and 6-3 after two, but were
•;utscored 4-2 by the Sailers in the third
period. Steve Schenk, Mich Landry,
Richard Hay and Scott Batterman scored
singles for the Barons.
Five of the seven Sailor goals were
power -play efforts. The disciplined play of
the Sailors paid off for them as they let the
aggressive Barons take the penalties and
then capitalized on their power -play oppor-
tunities The Barons had 39 penalty
mute. .•innpar•erl to the Sa.i. ••• i7
minutes.
Wayne Nivins, up from the midgets,
made his presence felt in the Sailor lineup,
as did Rod Nurse, in his second game as a
Sailor. Newly -elected team captain Tom
Bean led by example throughout the game
with his hustle. Shawn Larder, recently
converted from left wing to defence, had a
strong game, too. Marcus Munro, the big-
gest of the Sailor forwards. made some big
mes
hits. Goalie Shawn Phibbs played well. He
will soon be getting some relief from the
Sailors other goalie, Jeff Roy, who has just
had the cast removed from a broken
finger.
Sunday's game will be followed by a
meet the players beef dinner upstairs in
the arena. Put on by the team executive,
the dinner will run from 5:00 to 7:00 p.rn.,
with `'^kets costing $6.50 advance or I:7.00
at the door. Advance tickets are available
from the players and executive members '
or by calling 524-9193.
