BY CAPT. WALTER CLARKE
SALVATION ARMY
Someone has written "One of the highest
of human duties is the duty of encourage-
ment. It is easy to pour cold water on their
enthusiasm; it is easy to discourage .one
another. Many a time a word of praise or
thanks or appreciation or cheer has kept a
man on his feet." The beautiful part about
encouragement is this: Anybody can do it.
Hebrews 10:24 says, "And let us consider
how to stir one another to love and good
works." Everyone needs encouragement.
There is one exempt from the need - to be
encouraged by others. This is especially
true within the family circle. The wife needs
the encouragement of her husband and
children. Children need the constant en-
couragement of both parents. Students at
school need to be encouraged by their
teachers. Employees need to be encouraged
by their employer. Members of sports
teams needto be encouraged by their coach.
Church members need to be encouraged by

each other.
Everyone can benefit from entourage-
ment. We must show concern, nterest,
care, consideration, compassion. Ve must
help, aid, or assist people in every way
possible. It will make a better community in
which to live.
Depression and discouragement are age
old problems. The Israelites in theirjourney
were discouraged. Numbers 21:4, " ilid they
journeyed from Mount Hor by the way of the
Red Sea, to compass the land of Ecbn: and
the soul of the people was much discourag-
ed." They need encouragement.
Throughout the Scriptures we find many
words of encouragement. Isaiah 41::3, "For
I the Lord thy God will hold they righthand,
saying unto thee, Fear not: I will heli thee."
Isaiah 41:10, "Fear thou not, for I arr. with
thee, be not dismayed: for I am thy God, I
o 1t
will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee,
Yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of
my righteousness." Matthew 14:27, "But
straightway Jesus spake unto them saying,
Be of good cheer, It is I; be not afraid."
People have a tendency to become
discouraged and to experience defeat in
doing that which is significant and helpful.
We are by nature self-centered creatures.
We live in a self-centered world that
measures success in terms of material
possessions. The sinful world provides no
encouragement.
Let's change for the better by encourag-
ing each other. Our wives, children,
students, employees, those older in years,
those in hospitals and institutions; all need
our encouragement. Christian, your respon-
sibility is great. Let us inspire others with
renewed courage, spirit and hope. Genuine
encouragement never fails to help.
Let us encourage each other to trust in
God, in Christ, His Son. Psalms 27:14, "Wait
on the Lord, be of good courage." I Samuel
30:6, "David encouraged himself in the Lord
his God."
