New work of fiction in libraries
A new work of fiction, the novel
"Homestretch" can be found in school
libraries and in the classrooms in Huron
County.
The 150 -page novel is the work of John
Greig of Gorrie.
The author is a student at F.E. Madill
Secondary School in Wingham and his
finished literary work represents a project
that he began as an elementary school stu-
dent at Howick Central School.
John was paid special recognition at the
Huron County Board of Education meeting
in Clinton on November 7. He was honored
by the board trustees and presented with a
token of appreciation. As well, John receiv-
ed an author's copy of his novel, presented
by teacher Warren Robinson.
Inter -faith Task Force
The public board of education in Huron
County has supported a recommendation
from the Anglican Church that calls for the
EDUCATION
Ministry of Education to establish an inter-
faith task force. This task force would hi
mandated to show ways that multi -faith
education could benefit the students in the
public school system.
Public schools are now required by law to
have opening and closing religious exer-
cises. As well public elementary schools are
also required to have two 30 minute periods
per week of religious education.
The Ontario Education Act also states
that while pupils are allowed to receive such
religious instruction, no pupil is required to
participate if his parent or guardian objects.
The current regulations have been
challenged in the courts as violations of
Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Huron Board trustees, in a report from the
Ontario Public School Trustees' Association
(OPSTA) learned that in July of 1986 the
Supreme Court of Ontario ruled that since
students could be exempted from taking
part in religious studies, that such exercises
were not a violation of Canada's Charter of
Rights. •
Meanwhile, an Ecumenical Study Com-
mission, representing major religions; is
lobbying the government for a more central
role for religious education in the public
schools.
The OPSTA is currently preparing a
discussion paper on religious instruction
and this paper will form the basis of the
OPSTA policy on religious instruction.
The request to form a special task -force is
a further endeavor to investigate religious
education at the school level and, to develop
new education ministry policies.
