Rotary winter concert series set
GODERICH - On December 17 as Part of
the Rotary Winter Concert Series, Howard
Cable will be conducting Orchestra London
at the G.D.C.I. Auditorium. This concert
will feature music of the Christmas Season.
One feature of this year's concert is the in-
clusion of local talent. For this concert, the
G.D.C.I. Jazz Choir under the direction of
Eleanor Robertson will perform.
Mr. Cable was born in Toronto and is a
graduate of the Royal Conservatory of
Music where he was enrolled at the age of
12. He studied under Sir Ernest MacMillian,
Dr. Healey Willan, and Professor John
Weinzweig. During his school days, he alter-
nated between leading his own dance band
and working as an oboist in the Toronto
Philharmonic. At the age of 18 he graduated
from the Conservatory with a degree in con-
ducting and bandmastership.
Mr. Cable has appeared as a guest con-
ductor of the Toronto Symphony, The
Norad, RCAF, and RCMP Bands, and other
leading Canadian symphony orchestras.
For 15 years he was the musical director of
the CNE, and also directed the variety
entertainment at Expo' 67 in Montreal. He
has arranged, conducted and written for
such stars as Robert Goulet, Victor Borge,
Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, and Lorne Green.
His original band compositions are ex-
tremely popular in England where he is con-
sidered to be one of the foremost experts on
the symphonic wind ensemble. Mr. Cable
has provided scores for some 30 documen-
tary films. His compositions and ar-
rangements in the educational field number
over 100 in the USA alone. He has arranged
for the Boston Pops and on Broadway he
was associated with Mitch Leigh for the
Man of La Mancha and has arranged for
Richard Rodgers and Meredith Willson.
Mr. Cable was musical director of the
Royal Variety Command Performance in
1964 when Queen Elizabeth officially opened
the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown
PEI. For the festival he composed the
musical drama Mary Queen of Scots and ar-
ranged Singin' & Dancin' Tonight, both of
which toured the country.
Mr. Cable has headed the music depart-
ment at Humber College in Toronto, the
Musical Theatre Department a the Banff
School. of Fine Arts and currently teaches at
the Etobiocoke School of Fine Arts in
Metropolitan Toronto. He also arranges for
the Canadian Brass, The Elmer Iseler
Singers, and Quintessence, and is director of
the Howard Cable Brass Ensemble.
The Rotary Club of Goderich is happy that
Mr. Cable is able to come to Goderich and be
part of Concert Series. This is the first of two
concerts being sponsored by the Club and
the Sully Foundation. It promises to be a
rewarding night, for those who are unable
to attend, the second concert ,in this series
will be on February 19 at GDCI and will be
an informal night of music with guest con-
ductor Brian Jackson a noted Canadian ar-
ranger and conductor in his own right. The
title of this evening is Jean's and The
Classics and will feature music of the '60, '70
and '80's. The special guests will be the
GDCI concert band that has been invited to
The Harrogate Musical Festival in England
at Easter.
Tickets for the series are now on sale for
Family $50, adult $20, senior and students
$15 for both concerts. Tickets for one perfor-
mance concert are adult ,$12. Students and
seniors $8.00 and are available from Camp-
bell's Cameras, Kings, Radio Shack, and the
Goderich Recreation Board Offices, or any
Rotarian.

The newly -formed Colborne Community Group met at the Colborne
Public School recently to discuss the viability of installing an
Adventure Playground at the school. The Colborne Township Ses-
quicentennial Committee presented the school with a cheque
( displayed here by students Jackie Vanstone, Chris Marchl and
Meighan Wark) for $2,000 toward the project. Last spring,
Goderich Legion Branch 109 contributed $1,000 toward the proposed
