Lions even
record with
home win
and road tie
The Goderich Lions Peewee's evened
their season's record last weekend with a 5-4
win over Ilderton and a 6-6 tie with Belmont.
They now have two wins, two loses and two
ties.
At home Friday against Ilderton, the
Lions held leads of 3-1 and 5-2 before
finishing off the opposition for the victory.
The game was 10 seconds old when the
Lions Chad Papple tallied when Paul
Wheeler's hard shot created a rebound in
which Todd Papple recovered and passed
off to Chad for the goal. With the game tied
at 1 each, Jason Cook flipped in a goal
mouth scramble with Jason Jeffrey and An-
drew McLarty assisting to give the locals a
lead they would never give up.
Goderich's Dave Boyce made it 3-1 sliding
a puck in from the side of the net as Shaun
Carver assisted. With the game 3-2 to start
the third, Jason Hayter's solo rush with a
shot from the top of the right circle made it
4-2 and less than a minute later, Andrew
McLarty fired a low hard shot to the corner
with Jason Jeffrey assisting turned out to be
the winner. Shortly after this, the Lions got
themselves into penalty trouble in which Il-
derton took advantage of and made the con-
test close.
In Belmont, the Lions came from behind
twice to gain a tie in a penalty -filled game
which dictated the scoring. l3ach team
tallied three powerplays in accounting for
their scoring. Andrew McLarty had the hat
trick to lead the Lions offense with single
goals going toi Jason Hayter, Mark Phillips
and Paul Wheeler. Assists went to Jason
Jeffrey, Mark Phillips and Jason Cook with
two each and singles to Chad Papple and
Sam Hosack.
The Lions will be back in action this Satur-
day when Exeter comes to town.

The
Sailors drop 7-3 road
decision to Port Elgin
BY T.D.
If hockey games were two periods long,
the Goderich Sailors would have won Fri-
day night's OHA Junior 'C' hockey game in
Port Elgin, 3-2. But they" aren't and they
didn't. Instead, the Port Elgin Bears
scored five unanswered goal's in the third
period to win 7-3.
The Sailors, through a variety of cir-
cumstances, found themselves short of
players and although the players they had
gave it their all, they could not hold off the
Bears.
Darrell Durnin opened the scoring for
the Sailors in the first period on a pass
from Byron Bowman. Rod Nurse, in his
firstg ame with the Sailors, gave Goderich
a 2-0 lead scoring on a play with Shawn
Larder and Jason Papple.
Wayne Simmons got one back for the
Bears before the end of the period.
Each team scored once in the second
period. Chris Karcher scored for Port
Elgin, tying the score at 2-2 but Marcus
Munroe's goal, assisted. by Jason Papple,
put the Sailors up by a 3-2 score before' the
end of the period.
The roof fell in in the third period as the
Bears blew five by Sailor goalie Shawn
Phibbs. Wayne Simmons, Brad Nuttol, Al
Kruderink, Wayne Thompson and Chris
Karcher were the scorers for the Bears.
The Sailors, who are now 0-6 in league
play face off against the Wingham
Ironmen here Friday at 8:30 p.m. Satur-
day, the Sailors make their first trip of the
season to Mount Forest to tangle with the
Patriots, the newest entry in the Junior 'C'
league. The Patriotshave been attracting
big crowds in their home rink in their
games so far.
The Sailors are hoping that some of their
injured players will be able to return to the
lineup for the weekend games. The ex-
ecutive also hopes to have obtained
releases for three players from Clinton
that the Sailors have been unable to use
yet.
