It directly supports the in- erests and -welfare of the war veterans Lnd their families. It has also beenrinvoly- d in wide community service. I will give 'ou a few examples. It established one of he first senior citizen's homes in Goderich n'1963. It was and is called 109 Homes, ocated at South St. and Britannia Road. In L977 the branch received $10,000 from the Sully Foundation when it transferred the Lancaster Bomber to the, Warplane Heritage Foundation to be used as a scholarship to assist students at universi- ty, These are only two examples of 100s of community projects, sponsored by Branch 109. In 1985 alone they donated over $40,000 to community projects. When did public speaking start? I must confess I couldn't find out. I do know that my sister Anne Marie spoke at the Legion in 1973. I am sure however it started a long time before that. The closing words of each meeting of the Royal Canadian Legion are "Lest we forget". I hope this speech will help young people like myself to. remember. In order to help us remember I would like to recite to you a verse from a poem by Rudyard Kipling which was in the Legion magazine that prompted this speech. I went into a public house to get a pint of beer, The publican he up and says, "We serve no red coats here" Then it's Tommy this and Tommy that and Tommy how's your soul But it's thin red line of heroes when the drums begin to roll. For it's Tommy this and Tommy that and "Chuck him out the brute". But it's saviour of his country when the guns begin to shoot. MAUREEN MURPHY ST.
