Local Legion branch
record producers in 1979
The -music business is not one most peo-
ple normally associate with the Royal
Canadian Legion, however, in 1979,
Goderich Legion Branch . 109 became
record producers with the release of their
first (and only) album "Precious Men".
The album was prepared as a musical
tribute to those who served and those who
died in World Wars I and II as well as in
Korea and includes the favorite songs
from both World Wars. Those songs were
performed by the Goderich Harbouraires,
whose membership includes a -number of
veterans. The Choir was directed by Lorne
Dotterer.. A special musical arrangement
of each song was written for the choir by
two professional musicians. Ed Stiles, of
Goderich, did the piano arrangements.
• The title song is an original song written
and performed by Theresa Dufty of
Goderich, who conceived the idea for the
song following the death of her father in .
Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto.
The album also includes a prize-winning
poem, written in 1978 by then GDCI stu-
dent Donna Freeman.
The album was taped in May, 1979, at
King Studios in Wingham and pressed by
World Records in Bowmanville.
The album committee members from
Legion Branch 109 were : Neil Shaw (chair-
man), Theresa Dufty, Ed Stiles, Les Riley,
Ed—Tonks, Roy Mugford and Walter
Sheardown.
The album cost about $15,000 to produce,
with Dufy and the branch sharing the costs
and profits.
Shaw notes the Legion still has some
copies of the album, if anyone is interested
in obtaining one.
