`Service not for Self'
motto of the auxiliar
Ladies Auxiliary marks
its 40th anniversary
`Service not for Self' is the motto of the
Royal Canadian Legion and no other branch
of the organization exemplifies these words
more than the Ladies Legion Auxiliary.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of
the Goderich Branch of the Ladies Aux-
iliary. The local branch boasts a member-
ship of some 218 ladies but is always looking
to increase those numbers.
"We are always looking for new members
to assist. us with our work," says Evelyn
Carroll, a past president of the Goderich
Branch. "Our concerns are: the veterans,
the Legion and the community, in that
order. We're strictly business and seem to
be too busy to have social times."
The Ladies Legion Auxiliary does a great
deal of work in the community throughout
the year. Their biggest project is the cater-
ing of various social functions, explains
Mrs. Carroll, along with the annual Legion
Snowflake Bazzar which will take place this
year on November 4. The bazzar is an ex-
hibition of crafts with a luncheon and an
afternoon tea.
In addition to the various local activities
supported by the Legion Ladies, they also
contribute to a province -wide bursary that
assists students seeking further education.
Last year, the Ontario Ladies Legion Aux-
iliary raised over $7 million and counted
27,193 members in all of 390,branches across
the province.
The Goderich Branch also sends special
gifts each month to patients of the
Parkwood and Westminster Veterans
Hospitals in London.
"We are a volunteer organization," says
Mrs. Carroll.. "The Auxiliary meets once
per month with an addition executive
meeting each month as well."
To her credit, Mrs. Carroll, whose hus-
band was a veteran, was president of the
Goderich Branch from 1953 until 1958. She
acted as a Zone Commander for the pro-
vince for eight years and took on the position
of provincial treasurer in 1972. Since that
t`ne she has literally worked her way up
through the ranks to the position of second
vice president.
To become a member of the Ladies Legion
Auxiliary, one must be of good character
and be a wife, widow, mother-, sister,
daughter or grandaughter of a veteran or an
associate member. There is a minirhal
membership fee of $10 per year.
"Of course, our membership, under those
requirements, will eventually dwindle,"
says Mrs. Carroll, "but we know there are
more eligible members in the community
and we'd like to invite those people to join us
in our work.
