The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-11-04, Page 9GO.. EPICHH_.,. Fashion show for, epilepsy in Benmiller Dr. John Girvin, chairman of the Depart -- merit of Clinical Neurological Science and co-director of the University Hospital Epilepsy Unit, was in Benmiller over the weekend. He wasn't performing surgery or lecturing as you might expect, rather, he was modelling clothes. Dr. Girvin was just one of many notable personalities who took part in the Third An- nual Fashion Show for Epilepsy sponsored by the Huron/Bruce/Perth Epilepsy Chapter and held at the Benmiller Inn. The purpose or the fashion show istwo-fold, says Marj Vere, co-ordinator of the local. chapter. "The annual show is a great way to -create public awarness for epilepsy," said Mrs. Vere, "and it acts as a good way to raise much needed funding for continuing research." • 1n addition to Dr. Girvin, fine fashions were expertly modelled by Judge John McGarry of London, Clinton's firechief Fred Lobb, and Goderich physician Dr. Derek Pearce among others. Two other models of note included Kathy Bromley of Blyth and Rob Baker of Hensall. Both Kathy and Rob have undergone surgery, performed by Dr. Girvin, to correct their epilepsy disorders. This mont:;, Kathy will celebrate six months without a seizure while Rob has been seizure free for almost three years. Aside from viewing the latest in fall and winter fashions provided by local mer- chants, fashion show goers had an oppor- tunity to gain a greater understanding about the chronic disorder of the central nervous system which. effects so many people. "We have two mottos here," said Mrs. Vere, "It's not what you think, and I'm the same as everyone else. Public awarness is very important in our work." November is National Epilepsy Month across Canada and the Annual Fashion Show for Epilepsy was an excellent way to kick off the campaign. Attendance ,for the show was very good and everyone, including the nervous models, certainly had a good time while gaining a greater understanding about epilepsy. The third annual Fashion Show, sponsored by the Huron/Bruce/Perth Epilepsy Chapter last weekend at Benmiller, showed'off the finest in fall and winter fashions and gained some much needed public awarness for epilepsy. Models for the show included Marg Hill ( shown here), co-director of the University Hospital Epilepsy Unit Dr. John Girvin, Goderich physi- cian Dr. Derek Pearce, Judge John McGarry of London, among others. Even the youngsters got into the act which amply kicked off November as National Epilepsy Month in Canada. (Rob Bundy photos Serviceis hallmark of Christian REV. PETER BALDWIN ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH Paul: "My Brothers and Sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is bvely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Put into practice what you have learned and received 'and heard and seen in me: these things do in your work and the God of peace will be with you." (Phillippians 4:8-11.) More and more events and facts flow in upon us these days, all reminding us that we here on earth are all indeed brothers and sisters. That we are dependent upon one another, and that how we get arong together on planet earth is critical for our very sur- vival as a species! We are all in the same great adventure of life on this tiny planet, rVEE. .. fIP 482-7103 PECK APPLIANCES "IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN VARNA" PERM SPECIAL With Alphea & Mary -Lou only... 281 only.- 32. Dec. 5 MINISTER'S STUDY floating along in space. More and more we are coming to realize that in the circumstances, the highest call- ing to our humanity is the call to serve one another. The call to service is reflected in some words of the great Louis Pasteur. "In what way can I be of service to humanity? My time and energy belong to humankind." Service, then, is the hallmark of the humanitarian, but especially of the Chris- tian. We need to care for others, and to serve them. However, we must guard against tak- ing on the problems of others at the expense of our own emotional overcare. Rather, we do need to care but to leave the deep and final care and love to God, and His eternity. GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1,837—PAGE 9 G.D.C.1.
