The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-11-04, Page 50 inion Writers urge Goderich residents to write to Mayor concerning need for aquatic centre Dear Editor, The Aquatic Centre Committee presented Goderich Town Council with a realistic plan for an indoor pool complex. Their recommendation was based upon an extensive study by an experienced consul- tant. His report indicated broad support for such a complex from all age groups. Young and old alike indicated that year- round swimming was a high priority recreation activity that they would like to see available in our fine town. Such facilities are available in many other cimilar ci7Arl tnwnc LETTERS .4111116 Goderich Town Council " received" the report at their meeting on October 5, 1987. They took no action on the report. They did not refer it to one of their committees to study feasibility and financing. This in reality means that Council has decided to reject an aquatic centre tor the Town of Goderich. If you feel our community would benefit from an aquatic complex, please write or speak to the Mayor or the Town Coun- cillors. Ask them to reconsider their deci- sion and at least refer the report to their committee structure for feasibility and financial study. Letters to the Mayor or the Town' Councillors may be addressed c/o: Town of Goderich, 57 West St., Goderich, Ont. Telephone 524-8344. Sincerely Jim and Leslie Rourke Voluntarism from the heart Dear Editor: "Voluntarism is an action straight from the heart, a way of forging links between people, a way of guaranteeing greater humanity and a solid foundation for civilization and social innovation". We can all agree with these words of Patricia Fulton, President of the Canada Volunteer Award, National Selection Committee. Each year Federal Health & Welfare Canada search in all 'communities to honor individuals who have made a remarkable and continuing contribution in promoting health and socialservices in thAir rnm- munity. They need your help! I was fortunate to receive this award in 1984, thanks to the Goderich Legion for submitting my name. That year most of the recipients were from rural communities. The selection committee is uniquely made from the volunteer sector across Canada and give careful consideration to each nomination. I have a copy of the ap- plication form for this award, and would welcome calls regarding the criteria in- volved for submitting a name. Nomina- tions must be submitted to the Canada Volunteer Award Secretariate before December 1 each year. Voluntary organizations, community groups, in- dividuals interested in submitting a nomination, please write to the Secretariate, Department of National Health & Welfare, Brooke Claxton Building, Rm. 534, Tunney's Pasture, Ot- tawa, Ontario K1A OK9. Writer seeks info on agriculture movement Dear Editor: "Save Agriculture - Save Canada", is a headline that could well have been taken from any current paper. It wasn't. It ap- peered in the Weekly Sun in 1933. This slogan was the basis for the forma- tion of a grotip known as The New Canada Movement. At that time, it was felt, the grave situation facing agriculture in Canada was a challenge to the youth of rural areas to awaken and do something about it. During the winter of 1933, counties such as .yours, were "stormed", in more ways than one. Working through one of the bit- terest winters on record, The New Canada Movement swept through county after county, gaining a membership of 7021 farmers. ' Were you part of this -event?
