Primary students at St. Mary's school, as well as primary students from area Catholic
schools, were treated to a performance by the Interstage Theatre Company Thursday mor-
ning. The repertory company performed "Dick Whittington and His Cat." Describing
themselves as a "theatre of imagination" and "a musical theatre", the troupe performed
the English storytale using acting, dancing, mime and songs with feiy sets and simple

Colborne students are. busy
preparing for Halloween party
FRENCH
Grade 6 did an excellent job of designing
individual schools of the future. Their ef-
forts are displayed in the primary hall.
SENIOR CHOIR
Senior choir has begun preparations for
our Remembrance Day assembly. Choir
practices take place Tuesdays at noon hour.
Members include all students frorn•grades
5,6,7, and some grade 8s.
Mrs. Rea's•Grade 2-3 class have been busy
working on •Halloween activities. Their
root looks especially scary with spiders
dangling overhead and witches lurking.
Mr. Sander's Grade 3-4 have just com-
pleted'pa unit on road nmaps. • Many of the
students received, certificates qualifying
them as road map readers.
Mr. Bond's Grade 6-7 class is into
gruesome ghostly. diorama construction to
accompany- Stories, designed to turn hair
white. Platis are to spook other students in
the school with their multi -media
presentations.
The Grade • 8 class is currently- studying
exponents- and order of operations. 'They
have just started studying the War of 1812 in
History. Most of the Grade 8 class will be
busy Friday assisting the, students council
' with the Halloween Party. Many exciting
games have been planned including Pin the
Wart,. Pumpkin bowling, Ghost pond,
Musical tombstones and Pumpkin toss as
well as a Haunted House. Next week, the
grade 8s will start construction components
COLBORNE
CONNECTIONS
for the Santa Claus Parade float.
The senior boys volleyball team was pick-
ed this week. Team members are Regan
Millian, Brett Harman, Chris Geddes, Jason
Wray, Matthew Drennan, David Bogie,
Chad Bogie, Corey Budden and Jeremy
Brindley. They are diligently practising for
the Nov. 28 tournament.
The senior girls volleyball tournament
was picked this week. Team members are
Jackie Vanstone, Linda- Kerr, Rose -Marie
Young, Leslie Stoll, Laura Hord, Andrea
Imanse, Kim Dungale and Jennifer
Sutherland. The team will be practising dai-
ly for the tournament in November.
• REMINDER TO PARENTS
Remember- the meeting at the school
Tuesday,. November 10. This meeting is
scheduled to look at some Adventure
Playground ideas. At 7:30 p.m., a film en-
titled The Serious Business of Play which
outlines the importance of play to the learn-
ing process will be shown. Mr. Paul
Bradley, a representative from Henderson
Recreation, will discuss the features of the
Playground components manufactured, by
his 'company. Everyone Welcome.
Grade 4 learns about elephants
PRIMARY
Mrs. Cameron's. Kindergarten students
are making Halloween decorations for
their room. This week we made bats,
ghosts and black cats;

Miss Mathers''Grade 1 students are busy
working on Halloween stories and centres.
We' enjoyed having Mrs. Graham in our
classroom on Thursday, October 15. She
helped_ us make people in Halloween
costumes. They are "on parade" in the
primary hall.
Room 4, the Dinosaur Treehouse, has
been studying leaves 'and treeshouses.
Believe it or not we have a treehouse in our
room. We made leaf projects. If you
would like to see them, they will be in the
front hall. Room 3 and 4 are going on a trip
to Zehrs, McDonalds for lunch and Evans
farm. Bradley Hodges was "Special Me"
and now it's Tiffany Foster.
Grade 3 students in room 10 went to West
Wawanosh Conservation Area on October
8. We -learned about six different trees. On
Friday, October 16, we are to bring in our
leaf projects. On October 19 April Moir
had a birthday and on October 21 it was
Joey ('ulbert's birthday. We also made
pumpkin faces.
JUNIOR NEWS
Grade 4, portable 2 students are doing
elephant research. We did crossword
puzzles, elephant writing and elephant
rhyming. We also did elephant pictures in
the class. Mr. Culp is reading as a stork
about an elephant named Jumbo.
Grade 4, room 9 students had a mystery
letter and we don't know who write it but
we will find out. We went on a scavenger
hunt. We tried to find the treasure. The
leaders were Jenean Todd, Mellissa
MacLennan and Anjana Dhaliwal.
Grade 5, portable 1 students are having a
food festival. The students have done a
project on it. Each day we sample several
recipes. We are also making stories about
Halloween. The students that went to
cross country did very well. Eric Andrew
won ist prize from our class. We are stu-
dying Ontario also.
SENIOR NEWS
On October 13, Mrs. Graham came into
Mrs. Tebbutt's Grade 6 class. We learned
about colors. We filled a 60x46 sheet of
paper with blending and shading the three
primary colors. We also had black and
white colors for shading and tinting.
In Mrs. Allen's Grade 7 class, the cross
country runners had good results. Jodi
Webster got fourth and Lisa Cairncross 7th
for the intermediate girls. Terry Liv-
ingston got 5th for senior boys and Brock
BROOKSIDE
BROADCAST
Raynard got 14th. In History we have
started working on the Native Com-
munities of North America. Mrs. Zinn
came anc talked about the early settlers in
this area. Mrs. Graham came to help start
our Native Studies by making burlap
masks. The volleyball ' tryouts have
started and so has volleyball houseleague.
There are some good players.
Mr. Liddle's class has just finished the
Canadian Tests of Basic Skills which have
anumber of time two tests. Brad Park has
been in the hospital and we want to wish
him a speedy recovery. We are beginning
reading centres this week.
Mr. Hazlitt's Grade 8 class will be going
to the West Wawanosh Conservation Area
with Mr. Liddle for sciernce. We have been
working on our history projects which will
be due next week. Our Guidance Assign-
ment for this month is dh Study Habits. In
Phys.Ed, we have just finished soccer and
started volleyball. Last week was Doug
Helm's and RuthAnne Durnin's 13th
birthday.
SPORTS NEWS
On Thursday October 15, we had our an-
nual crow country meet at the Wawanosh
Conservation Area. We had perfect
weather and a great day. Brookside won
the overall pennant in the intermediate
girls, junior boys and midget boys divi-
sions. Eric Andrew, Dana Park and Joyce
McWhinney all placed first in their divi-
sion and Tracy Curran, Jeff Brindley,
Scott Rintour and Warren Andrew all plac-
ed second. Congratulations to all runners.
MISS KNETSCH
Miss Margriet Knetsch is new to our
school. She teaches French for grades 4
through 8. This is her first year of
teaching.
She lives in Stratford. Miss Knetsch was
' born in Curacao. She lived in Aruba for
many years. She is planning on getting
married in July. She has three older
brothers. Her hobbies are aerobics and
coaching. She would like to go to Aruba.
She speaks three languagek: English,
French and Dutch. Miss Knetsch says that
she likes teaching French because she en-
joys the kids and the language. Miss
Knetsch told us that she thinks that the
'Brookside staff and students are nice.
We are happy to have Miss Knetsch as a
teacher.
