cake celebrating 60 years of Brewers' Retailing in Ontario. In 1927 the Ontario Temperance
Act was repealed ending prohibition. However, Huron and Perth residents would wait until
1959 to abolish the Canada Temperance Act and allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in this

Brewers' Retail
60 years of Ontario service
With the abolition of the Ontario
Temperance Act on June 1, 1927, prohibi-
tion ended in Ontario and now Brewers'
Retailing and the Liquor Control Board of
Ontario are celebrating their 60th
anniversa ry.
However, residents of Huron and Perth
counties would wait another 32 years
before they were able to buy alcoholic
beverages in their own towns and cities. In
1959 they voted to repeal the Canada
Temperance Act.
Almost one year later, on November 2,
1961, Brewers' Warehousing Cornpany
opened the first ret, i1 store in Goderich.
The Goderich store celebrated 60 years
in Ontario and 26 years in ,Goderich with
cake and coffee Monday.
Pat Osborn, the current store manager,
was the manager when they opened and
along with his assistant Roy Kingsley, they
.operated the new store. The modern facili-
ty included an conveyor system, a p.a. and
mirophone system connecting the counter
to the refrigerator for calling out orders
and a fork lift truck. `
Before the Goderich store opened,
residents had to travel to either Grand
Bend or Kincardine to buy beer. Osborn,
originally from Preston, remembered
soon after the store opened, a, farmer
. brought in a hay cart full of empties he had
been saving.
As part of the celebration Brewers'
Retail is offering a 60th anniversary poster
of beer bottle labels through the years:
The poster costs $3.00 and proceeds go to
the United Way.
The Ontario Temperance Act was in
force from 1916 until 1926•and when liquor
stores first opened at 10.:00 a.m. they were'
oyer -run by anxious patrons. Around 370
customers were served in the first hour at
the .Tornto Dundas West- store where the
average purchase was $3.00. •
It would not be until 1947 that'the sale of
alcoholic beverages in bars would be
legalized.
