School News Grades 4-6 students at the three Goderich elementary schools were treated to an afternoon of pure delight Monday when the Sphere Clown Band visited Robertson Memorial Public School. The band, con- sisting of clowns Gizmo, Bumper, Patty and Banger, entertained the children with original songs, dances and comedy. The children even participated in the hour long presentation. FOR THIS SPECIAL SALE n MAIN STREET, SEAFORTH DRESS SHOPPE Not all clowns are found under the circus big top Not all clowns are found under the big top. of a circus as about 200 children discovered Monday afternoon at Robertson Memorial Public School when the Sphere Clown Band came to town. . . Formed in Toronto in 1977 by Patricia Silver Erlendson, herself a Sphere member, Sphere Clown Band has been entertaining • children and adults alike at concerts, schools and special engagements with their original music and comedy. Sphere involves the musical and comedic talents of four persons (or should I say clowns?) whose goal is to entertain and educate children at the same time. The four clowng are Patty (Patricia Silver Erlend- son), Bumper (Junn Erlendson), Banger (Rick Faye) ar :izmo (Allan Baedak). The group was in Goderich Monday after- noon to perform a one-hour concert for grades 4-6 students of Victoria Public School, St. Mary's Separate School and Robertson Memorial. Although Sphere does not usually give school performances, ac- cording to Patricia Silver Erlendson, the group's Goderich performance was arrang- ed by the Goderich Recreation Department. The group, all experienced children's entertainers and musicians, make it a point to have the Children actively participate in the show. "Usually we pick out a few children to come up on stage but the stage here (Robertson's gymnasium) is small and high so we will be involving the whole audience," Patricia Erlendson said. And involve the children they did. The troupe taught the children songs and actions and had the entire audience participating with minutes of walking on stage. The show, comprised of musical skits with- singing, ithsinging, • dancing and storytelling, covers such topics as safety, careers, animals, counting, sharing, instruments and self- concept development. —If we get the children involved, they get the message and have a better time," Erlendson said. But why clowns? "Why not? We enjoy being clowns. We hope to provide the audience with something different then what they normally see," she said. Although there is a clown school in the United States, Erlendson said it caters more to the circus type clown rather then the cabaret -type clown which Sphere represents. She trained with a clown per- former prior to forming Sphere and when the group was ,formed, she trained the ' members. Although members 'have joined and left Sphere in its 10 -year history, three of the current members have been together since 1979 (Bumper -1977, Patty -1977, Banger -1979). Allan Baedak (Gizmo) is the newest member ofThe group. Perhaps one of the most notable, facts about the group is that their children's album, "I Can Do Anything" produced under the label. of One -Eyed Duck, was nominated for a Juno Award in 1984. The album can be ordered through Sam The Record Man outlets. The Sphere Clown Band accomplished what it intended at Monday's performance. "It was exciting. They had fun the entire time," Erlendson said.
