The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-10-28, Page 11GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1987 -PAGE 11 New Goderich chiropractors hav When Doug Norsworthy and Helen Gianoulis finished their studies at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, their first order of business was to find a place to practice their profession. After touring the province, the couple settled on Goderich and have taken over the clinic formerly operated by retiring lccal chiropractor Herbert Such, at 107 South Street. "We were looking for the best area for the plans we had as far as lifestyle and careers. Goderich was so pretty, with the water and the beaches - not too many communities can really compare with what's here," said Norsworthy. Norsworthy and Gianoulis are both graduates of . the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College; The private Toronto school, which offers a four-year course in the field, is the only chiropractic collegein Canada. Norsworthy is originally from Windsor and graduated after four years at the University of Windsor with his Honors B.Sc., before enrolling in the CMCC .program. ' Gianoulis, a native of Regina, Saskat- chewan, became interested in chiropractic through an aquaintance in the field. While still in high school, she researched the sub- ject thoroughly and interviewed a number of practicing chiropractors and was con- vinced she wanted to enter the field by the time she graduated. She took a two-year pre -chiropractic (similar. to pre -medicine) course at the University „of Regina. Saskatchewan, she 'notes,' is the only province which offers a pre -chiropractic course of any kind. • Norsworthy and Gianoulis met while at the CMCC and began dating during their fourth year at the college. They were mar- ried this past summer after completing the course and, immediately embarked on a sort of "working honeymoon," in the Third World Country of Sri Lanka, where they studied clinical acupuncture at the In- stitute of Acupuncture, Homeopuncture and Lasertherapy, Colombo South General Hospital, in the city of Kaluboe'vila: Acupuncture is not taught as a part, of the course at the CMCC, but the couple wanted to learn the ancient practice as a way of broadening options for treating patients. "A lot of the theory and research into • how acupuncture works is the same as in chiropractic," said Norsworthy. Acupuncture gives the chiropractor an alternative method with which to treat some patients, he explained. studied in Sri ka Doug Norsworthy and Helen Gianoulis recently purchased the business of retired Goderich chiropractor Herbert Such. Local chiropractors Doug Norsworthy and Helen Gianoulis recently spent a month at Sri Lanka's Institute of Acupuncture, learning how to practice the ancient oriental science which has been shown to aid in the treatment of a wide variety of common medical disorders. FEATURE REPORT "If I'm treating you as a chiropractor and you 'come in with a case of eczema, I'm going to have trouble helping you," he said. However, he added, there is evidence to suggest many skin disorders can be suc- cessfully treated with acunpuncture. While the treatment can be effective, Northsworthy notes It can take longer than traditional treatments.. The couple chose the Sri Lanka program (they stayed for four weeks, working in the hospital administering hands-on treat- ment) over the other options because of the "clinical experience," it offered. "There are courses here and in the States for four weekends in a row, but it's more laser acupuncture (as opposed to us- ing the more traditional needles) and you don't get the clinical experience you get seeing people for three or four hours a day," said Gianoulis. "We were actually placing needles in pa- tients right from the first day we were there," added Norsworthy. "It takes a long time to learn how to nee- dle properly and painlessly," so the prac- tical experience of placing the needles was invaluable, said Norsworthy. Although the practice of acupuncture is not governed by legislation in Canada (you do not need a license to practice it) Norsworthy said some sort of medical or scientific background is imperative to those who wish to practice it successfully. Acupuncture points are located primari- ly by following anatomical landmarks. This makes an indepth knowledge of human anatomy essential. ' "Because of the anatomical landmarks, you really need a medical background or I don't think they would accept you into the course," said Norsworthy. There are a variety of problems which lend themselves to acupuncture treatment according to a provisional list drawn up by the World Health Organization in 1979. These include disorders of the eye, mouth, respiratory system, musculo-skelatal system and gastro-intestinal system. While in Sri Lanka, Norsworthy said he saw a case of "Frozen Shoulder," suc- cessfully treated in a matter of seconds with the application of a single needle. While acupuncture might be the most novel of their methods, it is only one aspect of Norsworthy and Gianoulis' practice. They also have a fully -equipped facility for treatment of patients through more tradi- tional chiropractic methods, having pur chased Such's equipment along with the business. The clinic officially opened under their management on Oct. 19. 0 oo fr 1T1H TOWHERE THE SMART MONEY IS GETTING MORE.
