Keep away from drunk drivers, Nash warns
BY TED SPOONER
Christine Nash kicked -off the two-week
ADAPT ( Alcohol and Drug Awareness
Program for Today) progam by speaking
to the students of GDCI about the alcohol
related death of a handsome high school
student — her son Ronny.
In an emotional address Monday morn-
ing, Nash told the audience she wanted to
make sure they graduated and fulfilled
their life's dreams.
Her son died two years ago when he and
a friend let another friend, who was drunk,
drive them home from school.
Nash lives in Gananoque, in the Thou-
sand Island area, and attends the local
high school, part time. She said she
understands teenagers.
"You care about your friends. You care
so much, death is your number one fear."
Many people don't know how to handle
someone who is drunk, said Nash.
"It takes a lot of guts to take the keys
away from a drunk friend. They may
swear at you. They may put you down.
But the next day they will forget and there
will be a next day.
She said many people would rather get
into a car with a drunk driver than risk los-
ing their own license. Asking a drunk to
stop and let you out only makes things
worse, she said. She recommends you tell
the driver you have to go to the bathroom.
If that doesn't work, tell him you are going
to be sick. "Once you are out, get as far
away from the car as possible."
Nash said drunk driving is on tete upsw-
ing again. :"We have a terrorist on our
roads. One of every eight drivers is drunk.
He is devious. He is unseen. He is a
killer," said Nash. •
Statistics show, she said, most teenagers
die between Friday night and Sunday. As
well, teenagers do not die in car accidents
alone. Generally, it is a car full of kids that
crashes.
Nash has another son Robby, 16 and she
has resisted the temptation to keep him in
a "cocoon."
Having lost one son, I want to hold Rob-
by in my arms and keep himin the house,
but he must be allowed to live his own
life."
Robby is beginning to make his own
decisions about drugs and alcohol, she
said. "But it is not like a scale," she said
holding out her hands, "drugs on one side
and alcohol on the other. You don't need
drugs or booze to have a good time. If I
played a radio you would .all dance and
have a good time."
Nash made a list of things that were cool
and uncool. Cool is planning a party, being
invited to a party, being part of a group,
owning a car and being a designated
driver. Uncool is being made to do what
you don't want to, being sick on your shoes, '
getting killed and having your parent iden-
tify your body, and smashed cars—models
don't lay on smashed cars.
Nash, who has been speaking to students
since her son died, said teenagers,
especially athletes have a sense ,of invin-
cibility. Her message is simple— "You
cannot make your bodystrong enough to
withstand a car accident."
