was probably the best forward on the ice
for the Sailors, but he will be lost to the
team for several games as a resultof a
match penalty he received for high stick-
ing after he was speared by the Patriots
Hoy .Nielson.
Frank Goetz, Scott Weber and Brent
Moore were the Mount Forest goal -getters.
The Patriots hustled throughout the
game and gave the Sailors all they could
handle. If Friday's game is a repeat of
last week's local fans should see a good
game.
Goderich goaltender Jeff Roy, who
comes to the Sailors from Clinton, played
well for the Sailors. Along with Phibbs, he
should give Goderich strong goaltending
this season.
The Goderich Sailors go into their
J.H.A. Junior `C' opening. league. game
here Friday night at 8:30 p.m. against the
Mount Forest Patriots with a winning ex-
hibition game record behind them.
The Sailors had three wins, a tie and one
loss in their five game exhibition schedule.
After splitting a pair of games with the
Wingham Ironmen last weekend, the
Sailors won two games with Thedford and
tied Mount Forest 3-3 here Friday night.
The Sailors defeated Thedford 5-2 'at
home and 4-1 in-Thedford. Five different
players scored for Goderich in the first
game. Jason Papple and Byron Bowman,
a pair of promising young defencemen,
plus forwards Dave Duncan; Shawn
Larder and Darrell Durnin scored
Goderich goals.
Scott McKellar and Brent Brown got the
Thedford goals.
In Thedford, the Sailors netminder
Shawn Phibbs was within 55 seconds of a
shutout but Steve Wilson's power play goal
took nothing away from the outstanding
performance in goal by Phibbs.
Tom Bean had two goals to lead the
Sailor scoring while Jason Papple and
Shawn Larder notched the others.
In the game here Friday, the Sailors and
Mount Forest, a new team in the Junior C
league this year, were evenly matched
throughout the Lame. The score was 0-0
after the first priod, 2-2 after two and 3-3
at the conclusion of the fast paced third
period.
Derek Jefferson, Scott Stokes and Tom
Bean scored the Goderich goals. Jefferson
Peewee Lions open with win and tie
The Goderich Lions Peewee's opened the
1987/88 hockey season last weekend with a
2-1 win in Lucan Friday and a 3-3 tie at
home Saturday against St. Marys.
In the Lucan game, both teams had to
contend with very soft ice, however it was
the Lions that were by far the better check-
ing team. Tracting 1-0 after the first period
the Lions got on the score board ,as Paul
Wheeler corrected on a goal mouth scram-
ble with Chad Papple assisting mid -way
through the second period. The winner
came from Todd Papple on a breakaway
at 5:39 of the third with Chad Papple and
Jason Hayter assisting.
Against St. Marys Saturday, the game
turned out to be a very fast paced Contest
with lots of up and down action. The Lions
held a 3-1 lead with only minutes remain-
ing, but being unaccustomed to, back to
back controls this early in the year, they
MINOR HOCKEY
tired fast in the third! Goderich trailed 1-0
in the first until Jason Jeffrey's well plac-
ed shot in the corner tied the game as An-
drew McLarty assisted. Then two second
period goals by Andrew McLarty gave the
Lions their 3-1 lead. Jason Cook and Jef-
frey assisted on the first McLarty goal and
Jeffrey on the second.
Members of this year's Lions team are:
Goalies, Chuck Mockennan and Jamie
Redmond, Defencemen, Mark Phillips,
Jamie Stanley, Sam Hosack, Jason
Volland and Jason Hayter. Forward are
Andrew McLarty, Jason Jeffrey, Jason
Cook, Jeff Beange, Shawn Carver, David
Boyce, Todd Papple, Chad Papple and
Paul Wheeler. Coaches and managers are:
Dennis Williamson, Doug Cruichank,
Chris Carter and Vic Whetstone.
The .Lions next outing will be in
Strathroy this Saturday before returning '
to Goderich Saturday against Lambeth.
