ivtembers past and present of the Goderich Harbouraires got
together on the weekend to reflect on their 40 years of delighting au-
diences. The reunion, held in Holrnesville, saw close to 80 members
of the mens' choral group gather for a meal and special presenta-
tions by local dignitaries. Before the festivities, all the members
present got together for this group photo that takes in four decades
on harmonizing. (Rob Bundy photo)
Harmony at its best!
Harbouraires
have entertained
When George Buchanan returned from
the Second World War, his ambition was to
organize a men's choral group.
This was inspired by listening to several
m"en'sgroups while serving overseas.,
Thus, in 1947 a choir was organized.
One of the first considerations was to
decide on a name. Since the organizing
meetings and practices were mostly held
at Sky Harbour Airport through the
generosity of one of the members, it seem-
ed that the name "Harbouraires" would be
for 40 years

This decision was reinforced by the fact
that a big percentage of the members at
the beginning were from the Port Town of
Goderich. Over the years, many valued
members have come from Clinton,
Bayfield, Holmesville and surrounding •
area. One member continues to be active
after moving to Stratford. .
After afire destroyed the hangar at Sky
Harbour. Airport, practices were hell at_
North Street United Church and now this
past number of years at Knox
Presbyterian Church.
About 1954, the Harbouraires were in-
vited by the Schneider Orpheus Choir to
join the Amalgamated Male Chorus of On-
tario which is affiliated with the
Amalgamted Male Choruses to America.
The A.M.C.A. motto is "Good Singin, Good
Fellowship and Public Service."
The first "Big Sing" in which they par-
ticipated was an International one of 750
voices held in the Kitchener Auditorium on
May 18, 1957. The experience resulted in
them hosting a "Big Sing" in the spring of
1958 at Goderich District Collegiate
Auditorium. The following year (1959), a
"Big Sing" was held in Massey Hall,
Toronto, hosted by The Queensmen.
Over the years, many other '`Big Sings"
have been attended in London, Port Huron,
Detroit, Hamilton, Brantford, Niagara
Falls, Cambridge -Waterloo, and the New
York World's Fair in 1964. The largest
"Big Sing" attended was an International
one held at Grand Rapids, Michigan, on
April 23, 1983, in which over 2,000 singers
participated. This was sponsored by the
Schubert Club, Grand Rapids on the occa-
sion of their 100 years of co-operation. The
Schubert Club is considered to be ' the
oldest independent male chorus in
America.
The Harbouraires hosted further "Big
Sings" in the spring of 1979 at Knox Church
and in the fall of 1982 at Goderich District
Collegiate Auditorium. To commemorate
their 40th year, a "Big Sing" was held
April 26, 1986, at the Goderich District Col-
legiate Auditorium.
