U.S.. group calls for, gill net ban
The largest state-wide conservation
group in the entire United States has an-
nounced its support for the Ontario
Federation of Anglers and Hunters
(O.F.A.H.) as the Federation tries to get a
ban on the use of gill nets by Ontario com-
mercial fishermen. .
In its resolution on the issue, the
100,000 -member Michigan United Conser-
vation Clubs ( M.U.C.C.) confirms that
many studies have consistently shown that
sport fishing generates a far greater
economic return than commercial fishing,
that fish stocked in Michigan do swim into
Ontario waters where the government
allows the use of gill nets, and that gill' nets
kill trout and salmon.
Michigan has already moved to save
their valuable fish stocks by banning the
use of gill nets I except by ,Indians in
Iimited and designated areas I.
The M.U.C.C. supoorts the O.F.A.H. and
joins it in urging the Ontario Minister and
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources to
take action to bap the use of gill nets from
the surface down to a depth of 250 feet ) 80
metres) in internaticnal waters.
Hanlys win Molson and
Scotch Thistle Trophies
The teachers and the juniors are all back
to school so there is not quite so much ac-
tivity around the course this week.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8th the ladies came
out in force, and so did the bugs. But
despite these small inconveniences we still
managed to turn in some nice scores.
Verna Kane carded first low gross in the
first flight, with Marie Huff, Mary Lapaine
and Joan McDougall taking first, second
and third low net. Ardith Brissette had
lowest number of putts. Grace Neville
showed the third flight the way with first
low gross. Sa,lly McEwen and Bertha
McGee took first and second low net while
lowest number of putts went to .Jean
Knight. Fourth flight winners were Kay
Duncan with low gross, Marilyn Cornish,
low net and Auleen Curry and Irla Stewart
tied with lowest number of putts.
Seeing that regular men's night was on
the holiday, they played on their alternate
night, September 10th. Thirty-two men
participated, ail anxious to get as mucic
