U.S.. group calls for, gill net ban The largest state-wide conservation group in the entire United States has an- nounced its support for the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) as the Federation tries to get a ban on the use of gill nets by Ontario com- mercial fishermen. . In its resolution on the issue, the 100,000 -member Michigan United Conser- vation Clubs ( M.U.C.C.) confirms that many studies have consistently shown that sport fishing generates a far greater economic return than commercial fishing, that fish stocked in Michigan do swim into Ontario waters where the government allows the use of gill nets, and that gill' nets kill trout and salmon. Michigan has already moved to save their valuable fish stocks by banning the use of gill nets I except by ,Indians in Iimited and designated areas I. The M.U.C.C. supoorts the O.F.A.H. and joins it in urging the Ontario Minister and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources to take action to bap the use of gill nets from the surface down to a depth of 250 feet ) 80 metres) in internaticnal waters.
