The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-09-02, Page 9Feature The waters of the Great Lakes reached record levels last year, causing property damage along most lakeshores. With the dry, hot summer water levels began receding and should stabilize by Great Lakes Water levels of the Great Lakes are ex- pected, for the next six months, to remain well below their record highs of 1986, says Environment Canada in its monthly news report on the water levels. Over the past few years, the high water levels have been wreaking havoc along the lake shorelines, as severe erosion has forc- ed many people to take remedial and long- term action to combat the water levels. Many cottagers along the lakes have simp- ly lost their property. The high water level has swallowed up beaches along the Lake Huron shoreline and many properties have been,threaten- ed. Slowly, the levels are receding. . Forecasters predict levels of lakes Huron, St. Clair and Erie will continue their seasonal declines and, by January, will probably reach points at 20, 10 and 30 January. The Goderich lakeshore was haltered by high water levels last fall and water levels appear in the chart below. ( photo by Dave Sykes) levels begin to recede supplies to bring that lake's level down sharply since April. Earlier this month, the outflow was reduced to slow the water level decline. During the month of July, the average level for Lake Huron, as recorded at Goderich, was 176.85 metres (580 feet), down from the 1986 average of 177.18 metres ) 581 ft.). That " fig'ire also represented the maximum. Over the last 10 years, the average lake level has ben 176.74 i 580 ft.) The lake level is expected to drop again slightly this month during its period of annual decline. Information about the water levels in the Great Lakes System, weather°information and facts about shoreline risk can be ob- tained by calling the Great Lakes Water Level Communications Centre in Burl= ington at 336-4581. cm respectively above their long-term averages. These levels will be between 50 and 60 cm below their levels of the same period last year. "This is good news," said Ralph Moulton, Manager of Environment Canada's Great Lakes Water Level Com- munications Centre. "The persistently dry weather has caused lake levels ,to decline, but shoreline residents and property owners should be aware that even with these lower levels, there is still potential for serious damage during the fall and winter storm seasons." Lake Superior is forecast to remain near long-term average levels, and Lake On- tario is expected to reamin 10 cm below average.
