New crop of
workshop at
The Blyth Festival's new play develop-
ment program is its most important an-
cillary activity. The workshops offer
playwrights an opportunity to try out their
work with professional actors and direc-
tors in order to create the best piece of
writing possible. Three new scripts are be-
ing workshopped at the Blyth Festival this
month, with extensive participation by
members of the company.
The first workshop is "Bravado" by Norm
Foster, whose play "The Melville Boys" has
received'production in almost every theatre
across Canada. Directed by Jerry Franken,
"Bravado" receives a public reading on Fri-
day August 7 at 3:00 p.m.
••'1'he Pig War" by Suzanne Finlay will
be workshopped during the week of August
10. Ms. Finlay's comedy. "Gone to Glory"
Bring your appetite for Puppet Shows to
your local library in August. As part off your
library's Summer Reading Program, a free
children's puppet program will be held at:

22 at 2 p.m. and at Bayfield Branch Library,
Tuesday, August 25 at 1 p.m. The library s
summer reading theme is "Gobble It Up" so
come prepared for a tasty program. Marian
Doucette will be your waiter for 30 minutes
of delicious fun. The menu will include
poems, puppets and a craft for dessert.

MONDAY, AUGUST 24 - The Imperial
Hell Drivers will be in Goderich on August
24. The 7:30 p.m. show, sponsored by the
Goderich Police Association, will be held at
the Goderich Racetrack. Tickets will be
sold at the gate. Admission is: Adults $5;
Children under 12,$3.
SHOW YOUR QUILT - The Huron County
Pioneer Museum invites you to display your
quilt in its thirs annual quilt show to be held
at The Livery, South Street, Goderich, from
August 22 through September 7,, 1987. The
quilts will be on display daily from 1 to 5
p.m. and Friday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m,

was extremely popular at the Festival last
summer. "The Pig War" is being directed
by Associate Artistic Director Terry
Tweed.
The final script to be workshopped this
summer is Rex Deverell's "Afternoon . of
the. Big Game", directed by Diana
Belshaw. Mr. Deverell is playwright -in -
residence at the Blyth Festival this sum-
mer. His play "Drift" was produced at the
Blyth Festival last year.
It is anticipated that public, readings of
"The Pig War" and "Afternoon of the Big
Game" will be held on Friday, August 14
and Friday, August 21 respectively.

public readings are free of charge.

'Corpse' shakes
the Playhouse
"CORPSE! ", a comedy thriller written
by Gerald Moon, directed by Steven Schip-
per, opens at the Huron Country
Playhouse/Main Stage on August 4 to
August 15.
"CORPSE!" is the story of twin
brothers, one of whom plots to murder the
other in the most unusual circumstances.
As with most fool -proof plans, things do not
go as they should and people are not what
they seem.
Featured in this clever, "whodunnit"
plot are Mark Christmann, Charles Kerr,
John Nelles and Helen Beavis. Artistic
Director Steven Schipper says, "CORP-
SE!"
CORP-
SE!" seems to me a highly theatrical
romp through the genre of comedy
thrillers. It blends humour and suspense in
fluid fashion. I am particularly honoured
to be working with Mark.Christmann. "
"CORPSE!" is' produced with the
assistance of Imperial Oil Limited and

'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe',
the classic tale by C.S. Lewis about the
escapades of Susan, Lucy, .Peter and Ed-
mund in the land of Narnia, will be
presented in Blyth on August 15 by Theatre
New Brunswick's Centre Stage Theatre.
Blyth is the last stop of a tour which will
have taken the Centre Stage Theatre
through the Maritimes and Ontario. The
group will be performing at the Blyth
Festival at 2 p.m. on August 15.
The show is adapted from the C.S. Ltewis
classic tale, a story which is filled with the
escapades and adventures of a group of
children who stumble into a fantastical
world of magical creatures when they step
into the wardrobe and shut its doors.
In this production, the audience will meet
talking unicorns, the White Witch, Aslan the
Lion, dwarves, talking trees and other
creatures. This theatre presentation uses
three, life size puppets, 23 imaginative,
masks, 24 costumes, and 28 talented actors
from New Brunswick. Life size puppets,
masks and costumes have been designed ex-
clusively for this production by Anna
Wagner -Ott with set design by Yvonne
Sauriol and lighting' design .by Mark
Stevens. Cathy Nosaty has created an
original score especially for this new
production.
The show is adapted and directed by
Philip Sexsmith. Prior to its Sunday presen-

shown by the 30 students we have working

tion will be showcasing'.the talented young
performers and designers that live in this

Theatre New Brunswick's 20th'

touring production of 'The Lion, The Witch
and The Wardrobe' is made possible

Forrester to attend dinner
The Blyth Festival's annual Gourmet
Dinner will be held on Saturday August 22,
6:00 p.m. at the Blyth Community Centre.
The food for this fund-raising event is
prepared and served by members of the
theatre's Board of Directors.
Included on the menu for the dinner are
the following dishes: chilled cucumber
soup; potted herb cheese; cold fish
"mousse; whole barbecued pig; fresh corn -
on -the -cob; tomato, broccoli and
cauliflower salad; hot mint -cabbage
salad; and more. The famous fruit pies
and fresh rolls are provided by the Friends
of Blyth. Organizer of this year's event is
Festival Treasurer Gayle Gundy, ably
assisted by John Rutledge, Mary Gregg,
Carol Irwin, Tina Chapman and other
members of the Board and Friends of
Blyth.
A special guest at this year's dinner will
be Maureen Forrester, Chairman of the
Canada Council. Miss Forrester will at-
tend the performance of GIRLS IN THE
GANG following the Gourmet Dinner. Her
last visit to the Blyth Festival was in 1984
when she was the guest speaker atthe
opening of the Festival's 10th anniversary
season.

Public Speaking competition held
This year, the Royal Agricultural Winter
Fair is hosting the third provincial public
speaking competition for rural youth.
The competition will be held on November
19. Preliminaries willbe 1 to 5 p.m. in the
Royal Room and the finals from 7 to 8 p.m.
on the Foodland Stage.
All rural youth between the ages of 17 and
24 years as of the competition date are eligi-
ble to enter.
