There were 98 entry fees paid in for a total of $9800, out of which $30 from each fee went to the golf course for green fees and dinner. The balance which is $70 from each fee is going directly to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children and amounts to $6860 and all the participants will receive an income tax receipt for $70. LETTERS Such.'an event can only succeed because of the co-operation of many people in- cluding the members of the Golf Commit- tee and the members of the Bluewater Shrine Club. The excellent prizes that were donated were greatly appreciated by the golfers and the names of each doner was announced' The committee is grateful for 'the generosity of the merchants in the area for providing these prizes. For all who came and enjoyed themselves playing golf, a sincere thank you, and also thanks to the management and staff of Oakwood formaking the day enjoyable. Next years Tournament will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 1988 at Oakwood Golf Course. On behalf of the Golf Committee and the Bluewater Shrine Club, Thanks to all. Bob McKinley, 1987 Chairman. Oshawa man disappointed by grave Dear Editor: I came to the Goderich area armed with W.H. Graham's book "Tiger Dunlop". One of our first trips was to Dr. Wm. Dunlop's grave. What a disappointment! We went to a road marked as the way to the grave. Within a short distance was a sign saying 'no exit'. There were cars parked there and so we parked there too. We found out that there was a good walk ahead of us and that farther on there was a sort of car park. A pointer saying 'Dunlop Parking' would have helped as we came in. From here we could see a Canadian Flag on top of the escarpment. There were no signs or pointers but there were two or three log steps on the side of the escarp-' ment but from there the way was guesswork. I finally found the flag and the grave but it was too hazardous a climb for my wife. She stopped'about half way up the escarpment. What I have to- show for the ` visit is a badly scratched wrist. Surely the minimum need are pointers pointing out the cleared path. Steps would help. Being curious I drove north along the Highway to see if I could see the flair but I couldn't. The flag could be seen from Highway 21, south of the gravesite. More visibility could help. It would be a tremendous asset if it were possible to obtain a pathway on top of the escarpment leading from the north-east to the grave. It certainly would make the grave accessible to everyone. Canadian history is said to be dull. Wm. Dunlop may not have been a great man but he was never dull. In his last years when he found travelling difficult he did not return home to campaign for re-election but was always returned with large ma- jorities. The people in the "Huron Tract" could always count on Dunlop to look after their interests. With his red hair, red whiskers, and wild sense of humour, he was a genuine 'character'. • It was a remarkable achievement that he built a road, meeting a deadline and making settlement in this area- possible. The road ran from Waterloo through Strat- ford through 'the wilderness' to Goderich. The first No. 8 Highway we owe to the skill and determination of Dunlop. .Another `character' I am interested in is John Ross of Brucefield. In temperament he was the opposite of Dunlop. As a minister he spent his whole ministry in Brucefield, refusing moves to larg r cen- tres because he said that he hadn't finished his work in.Brucefield. A man of principle, he sometimes stood all alone against the policies of the Presbyterian Church. I went to Brucefield and asked about John Ross and drew blanks. I was sent to talk to a couple of senior ladies. One knew that he was known as "the man with the Book", the way by which he was known outside the community. There is no marker or plaque and no one seemed to know where he was buried. So much for our old heroes! I wonder what Vincent Goderich or Governor 'Maitland would now think of the use of their names. Wouldn't it be interesting to have a set time each year to decorate Tiger Dunlop's- _grave and- - serve -. his favourite beverage? Volunteers have busy summer Hasn't this been a great summer, so far? I have been kept busy 'attending all the planned events that volunteer groups have been organizing for the community. Every week there are activities planned for every member of the family. If cooking is one of those household chores you would rather forget in the summer, well, you have been lucky this summer! Last Friday night the Shriners treated you to a Fish Fry in the Square. The Optimist Club sponsored the folk festival this month that a large crowd thoroughly enjoyed. It seems that there hasn't been a weekend that there hasn't been something going on to keep everyone participating. Myself, I am look- ing forward to Tiger Dunlop Days to be held July 31 -August 3rd.
