Sale of K may Care to nom -profit
board of directors finalized July 1
BY TED SPOONER
Cindy Austin, owner of K Day Care, has
sold her operation to a non-profit board of
directors called Little Kids' Corner Day
Care of Goderich Inc.
Because the board, headed by president
Debbie Selkirk of Lucknow, is non-profit
they are now eligible for a portion of the
money the Ontario Government has
allocated for day care. Privately owned
operations, such as Austin's could not
receive funding.
The day care centre has been located in
the basement of Knox Presbyterian.
Church for the past year and before that
they spent 15 months at the Kinsmen
Centre.
Austin had investigated the possibility of
renting or buying her own location, but
found the cost prohibitive. She has been
more than pleased with her arrangement
with the church. She has not been making
_enough money with the day care centre.
Austin, a graduate of Conestoga Col-
lege's Early Childhood Education course,
will be the supervisor of the new day care.
In addition, her four employees, three
teachers and a cook, have been
guaranteed a job.
The board has made a proposal to the
ministry for funding but does not expect to
receive confirmation or specifics concern-
ing the amount for at leat six months.
However, they will receive funding
because they are non-profit, said Austin.
The ministry also provides funding for 80
per cent of the cost of renovating a rental
location or 50 per cent of the purchase
price of a new location. The -board hopes to
be' in a new location by the spring, but the
building must meet certain standards to be
eligible such as: both natural and artificial
lighting, 2.8 square meters per child per
room, a fenced -in outdoor playgroud and
, kitchen and washroom facilities. If the
building has two stories, there must be two
exits and a washroom on each floor.
The board is looking at renting because,

The K Day Care Centre, located in the basement of Knox Presbyterian Church has been sold
to a non-profit board of directors, headed by president Debbie Selkirk. Here owner Cindy
Austin and board president, Selkirk play with some of the more than 30 children at the cen-
tre. They are: (from left to right) Erin Hoffmeyer, 3, Stacey Gilders, 4, Austin, Jesse
Maybon, 5, Selkirk. and Scott Rozendal, 5. The centre will continue operation in the church
until a new location is found, sometime in the spring. (photo by Ted Spooner)
according to Austin, there is no building in
Goderich that meets the requirements and
the renovation money would be the most
useful. The centre will continue at Knox
until a new location is found.
The sale of the centre was finalized July
1 but negoidtions concerning salaries are
ongoing, said Austin.
The centre cares for about 30 children
but the number drops in half in the sum-
mer and goes back up in the fall.
Cathy deJong was Austin's partner for
about one year, but since then she has run
the operation on her own.
