The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-07-08, Page 27Communit News St. Joseph's welcomes new principal Family and Children Services agency held their first annual picnic Saturday at Harbour Park with 75 people in attendance. The picnic was for foster parents, staff, volunteers and board. members. From leftare some of the children who took part in the games played, Courtney Brady, Peter MacLeod, Kyle Hamilton, Meghan Brady and front, Michael Mac- Phee.lphoto by Yvette Zandbergen) Collingwood shipyard area will be developed On May 6 we mentioned the demise of Collingwood Shipyard after 103 years. But a new ara is in store for that town as The CSL Group Inc. announces it will spend $80 million to redevelop 43, acres of its former shipyard property. To be dubbed "The Shipyards", the development will , be a combination of recreational, residential and commer- cial enterprises. In the plans are an international class hotel, marina, condominiums, offices • and retail shops. There will be public roads and walkways, and a lookout park on the water. Two architecturally signifi- cant shipyard buildings — the old machine and boiler shops , - will be preserved and incorporated ,into the development. But to shipping buffs, the noteworthy news is that CSL is exploring the idea of permanently installing a ship at the site. The April issue of CSL's newspaper "The World" states that the company "...has identified a Great Lakes con- tainer ship which it would like to berth permanently in the launching basin" at the old shipyard. If building codes can be met, walkways would pass through the sides of the ship and interior space might be used for restaurants, shops, theatre, marine museum, or exhibit centre. Now comes the question: which ship will it be? By container ship, does CSL actually mean package freighter, of which it has several? If so, surely it would be one which was actually built at Collingwood. SHTHEIPWATCHER'= By Dick With Of the eight inactive CSL lake vessels, one package freighter, MV Fort Chambly, was built in Collingwood in .1961. She is 463 feet long with a 56 -foot beam, and in the style . of package freighters has wide cargo doors, in her • sides. Her entire superstructure is located aft. Her former sister ship, the' Fort York, built in Collingwood in 1958, is lying vir- tually, derelict at Sarnia, her pairft peel- ing and hull rusting. Persumably she' would be ideal for the purpose. The forkner CSL steamship last operated a couple of years ago as a push -barge, hav,. ing a large V cut in her stern to accept the bow of a big tug. She has been tied up below the Bluewater Bridge since her last owners ran into financial trouble. Another possibility which this writer would like to see preserved is the hand- some old straight -decked bulk freighter Sir James Dunn. CSL has had her laid up at Midland for years. She is 663 feet long with a beam of 67 feet, and was built in 1955. She is said to have a good mix of the finest traditional fittings and the most modern equipment then available. The trouble is, the Dunn was built at Port Ar- thur shipyards. 4-H club members to compete 4in horse show at Dungannon 4-H members from the four clubs in Huron County will be competing in a Horse Show.
