Association
expands
its programs
The Ontario Division of the Canadian
Diabetes Association (CDA) is expanding
its Monitors for Children Program to in-
clude insulin-dependent diabetics of all
ages. Joan Siilith, MPP for London South,
has announced on behalf of Health
Minister Murray Elston.
The project, which will now be known as
the Ontario Monitoring Program, provides
tinanc al assistance tor the purchase of a
monitor that tests blood glucose levels at
home. The ministry will provide $500,000.
for the program this year.
Until now, ministry funding to the On-
tario Division of the CDA covered financial
assistance towards the purchase of a
monitor only for insulin-dependent
diabetics under the age of 21.

blindness and kidney failure. At present,
there is no cure for diabetes and the goal of
diabetes management is control — keep-
ing blood sugar levels in the body as close
to normal as possible.

Home blood glucose monitoring reduces
the frequency of laboratory tests and visits
to the doctor. Proper training in technique
and care and use of the equipment is essen-
tial; as is consultation with the doctor con-
cerning interpretation of the results.
